Recently, while looking in to fn p90, civy model, or knockoff maybe I came across this video of a guy who made one out of a 10/22 and an airsoft gun. Ya know the pretty accurately designed guns that shoot the little plastic bb's. Well long story short I have an old airsoft gun and an old 10/22. So I just want to know if its legal to convert and exactly how is it legal? If so I might just have a little side project.

EDIT: just a side question after reading the responses so far what's the legal OAL limit? 36"?

As long as inside of that plastic shell, the action of the 10/22 is still intact, nothing illegal was done. We are not denied the right to aesthetically alter our firearms.

Edit to add: ****as long as they continue to look like firearms. We ARE denied the right to make our firearms look like other objects.

As long as the lengths are correct and you are following all State laws you should be fine. If your barrel or OAL falls below the standard then you will need your tax stamp for a SBR.

Don't forget that your serial numbers need to be intact as well.

Do the serial numbers also have to be visible without dis-assembly? Not just intact but uncovered?

No, otherwise aftermarket grips that cover the butt of S&W revolvers would be illegal. Had one on my service Model 10 that I finally cut a hole in the bottom of because I got tired of taking the grips off every time there was an inventory.

the federal limit for a rifle is 26 inches overall.

With a 16 inch barrel (also the federal minimum), plus the length of the reciever, it's not tough to make it.

(anything shorter that isn't a pistol falls under Short Barreled Rifle/Any Other Weapon/Destructive device)

Just to clarify: Anything made FROM A RIFLE that becomes shorter than 26" overall and/or less than 16" barrel is an NFA Title II regulated weapon and has to be registered (BEFORE making).

Under federal law, you can't simply make a pistol from what started life as a rifle, at all, without the Title II registration.

The Muzzlelite 10/22 stock is AWFUL.

I'd take a swing at a modified airsoft long before I bolted that POS to my rifle.

True there are other stocks like a p90 but if I can make a sig 556 (the old airsoft in the closet) for dirt cheap on .22 platform I can save my money a bit longer. Also I disassembled the old toy earlier and the inside strips completely, so work might start soon let me know if y'all want updates with pics.
