Find me a new range (Atlanta GA)

Surely there are other ranges around. Maybe someone with a place in the county that would allow you to shoot. I know a place in SW Atlanta where my grandparents had a Sanitarium on 160 acres. It isn't in the family anymore, and it is all grown up. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but I'd bet know one would know or care. There should be a similar place in your neck of the woods. Might ask the Deputy's that patrol that area.

Hey blue, Wild West Gun Range in Marietta may let you. I think the ATF shoot there on Thurs. Also, Bullseye may talk to you. They are in the Alpharetta area but a Cumming address. Hope this helps.

How about shooting in the great outdoors but on an organized range, not out in the woods?

I have shot the Buffalo Rifle matches at River Bend, but they have plenty of pistol facilities.

I shoot here. http://www.floydcountywildlifeclub.com/ It is west of Rome near the Alabama line. I know it is a bit of a drive, but we have several members who drive from the Kennesaw/ Marietta area. They pack a lunch and make a day of it when they come. Probably too far if you are on the NE side of Atlanta.

It is a private club. Membership is $175/ year with $5/visit for the rifle pistol range. Or you can pay $25/ year for unlimited rifle/pistol shooting. No range officers. Everyone polices themselves. They also offer shotgun sports, camping, and fishing which I rarely use. I'm primarily a rifle and handgun shooter.

Saturday and Sundays can get crowded at times. I go weekdays and tend to get there before sunrise and have my targets mounted by the time it is light enough to shoot. I'm usually through by 10-11 AM and never see another shooter most of the time.

+1 for South River Gun Club. Their action pits are what drew me. Gives you your own personal range to shoot on the move using handguns or carbines, let alone drawing. The new member fee + the annual membership fee can be steep. But after that the price falls into your goal.

This range draws the "Atlanta crowd", sorry but no disrespect intended. Pull into the parking lot and it is full of Fulton and Cobb county plates. The problem is this range is remote and unsupervised.

Things that have happened to me here,,,,

Me and another fellow shooter were downrange setting targets when a barely supervised child picked up a .22 rifle and proceeded to "shoot at a butterfly". I nearly stroked out as I laid into the "adult", but all I got was "sorry mister, we will be more careful next time".

A wacko one day had a pair of semi auto 9 mm handguns with what must have been 30 round magazines blasting away one in each hand as fast as he could pull the trigger. He went through several boxes of ammo before I asked him why. He said he was breaking in his new guns. Sheesh!, he must of shot 300 rounds through each pistol like that.

Countless times my targets had extra holes not of the same diameter.

Target stands are orange plastic snow fence stretched across 4x4 posts. Watched a fellow purposefully blast a post with his high power rifle until he split it in two bringing down the whole target stand. He then literally jumped for joy.

I arrived once to find one enterprising young man had brought about a dozen men and women with him one Friday for his "office party." He was running all over the range between the 25, 50 and 100 yard stations trying to show everyone the hardware. They were nice enough make room for me on a bench. I struck up a conversation with one of them and as I found out NONE of the guests had ever handled a firearm, the leader had placed a fully automatic rifle in a ladies hands and she proceeded to ride the 20 round magazine to empty. As the last round left the rifle, it was at about a 60 degree angle above the horizon.

In each case above I left the range and noticed each time my vehicle was the only one in the parking lot without an Atlanta metro area license plate.

I have not been there in over 5 years.
