Came across an Enfield 303 carbine this week, what had me somewhat concerned is it looked way too good. I didn't have a lot of time to examine for proof marks, or other markings but best I remember is was a No1 Mk 3 carbine with full wood, bayonet lug and again just looked too darn good. My resources for the Enfield is limited, anyone have a link or place to look for without going thru GOOGLE list that most often don't have what I would call dependable information. If things work out I might be the owner of it by this weekend.

Sounds like one of the so-called "tanker carbines" - an SMLE cut down to carbine length by an importer, probably Navy Arms. Mildly interesting but not exactly authentic.

Sure it was still .303? There was a run of those in .308 about 20 years ago. I had one and it kicked really bad. Location?

The .308 rifles were cut-down Indian 2A/2A1 models.

I handled one of the .303 rifles some years ago; it was cut down from a Lithgow SMLE as I recall. It seemed a pretty handy thing but it offended my collector sensibilities. Still, what's done is done, I suppose.

Now there's a REAL Enfield carbine! The Rifle No5 MkI, alias the jungle carbine. Peculiar looking thing, but handy as they come, well suited to close quarters fighting. A handful of them saw action in the ETO in 1944-45 but mostly they served in SEA during assorted postwar operations. My Enfield collection is centered on No1 rifles and Lithgows in particular but I really should add a No5 one of these days.

I have not actually verified that it is still .303, I was on way to another DR appointment and didn't have a lot of time. I hope to meet up with the guy that has it this weekend, then maybe I can get some more details. "Roadkill, I'm NW of Bham, closer to Jasper out in the sticks." DougW that is the carbine that I would have expected, the one that this guy has is full wood to the end of barrel. And as I posted it looked too good, almost like it just left a plant.

How accurate are the .308 carbine? My local pawn shop has a carbine, but I didn't look at cause I would have bought it!

I've got one in 308, Indian mfg. The Indians had stronger steel in their receivers. The British receiver would not hold up to 308 pressure. Mine is pretty accurate for iron sights, but as said above, it's a snappy kicker.
