Hunting from a car

I used to be a game warden many years ago. If hunting out of an abandoned, disabled car, you wouldn't be breaking any laws as long as it wasn't on a roadway.
I dont mean this as an insult, but that would depend entirely upon which state you were in. Hunting regulations are far from universal, and what may be totally kosher in one area may be highly illegal in another. Just because it was "ok" once upon a time where ever you were stationed at doesn't make it universally true. That said, I can't help but think South Dakota must have the elite of conservation officers, because I've never met one that would consider hunting from an obviously abandoned vehicle as illegal in any way.

Modify the thing to make it clearly part of a blind and take a bunch of pictures. If the authorities want to claim it is hunting from a vehicle show the pics to them and point out that no judge will ever take them seriously again if they make such a claim.

K1500 & Dave1977, if you guys would re-read my post, I stated "depending on the location" which was meant to refer to whatever state you are in, not whether in the country or city or whatever else it could've been taken to mean. Dave again if you re-read my post, in no way did I imply that any game warden would consider a disabled vehicle as a mvoing vehicle. Hopefully none would. Typically disabled vehicles don't have engines running, and aren't able to move. Generally, it is illegal to hunt from a moving vehicle in every US state. There are exemptions in every state though. An instance of this is that in Louisiana it is legal to hunt squirrels from a moving motor boat. I'm not trying to throw a blanket statement on what may or nay not be legal for the situation orginally asked about. I'm merely trying to throw out some considerations that may or may not be pertinent depending on what location (jurisdiction) one is in.

Does the car have bullet holes in it? That alone would make me rethink things. In Texas, I've never stumbled onto an abandoned car in the woods that hadn't been shot.

I was extremely cold and spied an old Hudson sitting in the woods.
I climbed into it, the doors would still open, and used it for a wind break/shelter

I'm glad you posted this, brought back memories...

Years ago I was wandering around on state forest land and came across this old Hudson, rusted, sitting on the frame and yes, it had a few bullet holes in it.

So now, I wonder if it is just that back then old Hudsons just wandered into the woods to die or is there some connection to aliens or whatever.

Now I'm just too old to wander back there to see what is left of it, mayby I'll just let my grandsons know where it is and let them track it down.

It would have made a great deer stand tho... :)

Seems an old rusty car would be to noisy to move around in much while changing positions to shoot from one side to the other not to mention the rodents and bugs that probably inhabit them.
I suppose if one went out and purposely set up an old car as a blind the seats could be removed and gun ports arranged so it was much like a box blind. Where are all those who comment on how horrible it would be to shoot from inside a car in a defensive situation?

Yea, I thought about that when I got in it and it did have bullet holes and the windows were shot out. I didn't see any new holes, they were all rusted and about three times the size of the bullet that hit them.

I thought about that when I climbed in it but I also thought I'm probably the only idiot hunting today, it's almost to cold for deer to be moving around much. I only used it once because I was afraid of someone getting board and letting one fly at it.

What is it about abandoned vehicles and rural road signs?

I don't know but they sure get shot up. Disgruntled hunters I guess.
But lets face it, how often does someone get to put a hole threw a Hudson this day and age. That one I was in is probably a foot off the ground by now.

I was using a Remington 760 carbine, 308 with open sights. Short, Light, and easy to move. As far as bugs and rodents, at 5 below zero there weren't many of them around. In the summer time you couldn't pay me to climb in there. I'd be afraid of a snake being in there.

One summer I was climbing around in the shell of an old iron furnace and ran into a whole family of copperheads. That left a lasting impression. I didn't get bit but I think I ages 10 yrs getting out of there. Screw that.

The laws are against hunting from a moving vehicle. Now sitting in a car with the engine running would probably still be considered illegal depending on the location.

You did say "depending on the location" but the subject of the sentence you used it was a "car with the engine running". The second sentence of your first post makes no location stipulation, although I believe you intended the location disclaimer to apply to everything you said.

I bring this up not to flame you. I bring this up because the precision of your language matters if someone is going to take your advice. We read your advice as..." sitting in an abandoned car and hunting is fine as long as the engine is not running" when that is not the case in all 50 states.

In any event, a game warden would have to be a class A jerk to write someone up for hunting while sitting in a clearly abandoned and motorless car in the middle of the woods, regardless of what the statute says. Like I said, I have heard of it happening third-hand but I do not know what other circumstances surrounded the ticked (if indeed there was a ticket issued).
