So i recently acquired a 1976 wingmaster police gun with the dreadful factory topfolder and have been slowly converting it to something a little more useful. I found a nice mahogany stock sans butt pad, and a vintage pachmayr white line recoil pad.

Now ive been looking for the parts to turn it into a wingshooting gun also. Mag cap an spring are easy, but im stuck on the barrel. They are easy to find on ebay but im not sure which way i want to go. Particularly im stuck between a 30" plain barrel fixed full, or a 28" vent rib fixed mod. I plan on boring and remchoking either at some point. I really like the look of the flat top as it reminds me of the Ithaca M37 i had growing up. What say you guys?

Likely cheaper in the long run to buy the barrel length you want from Remington, already set up for RemChokes...

Yes.
So does Cabela's and other places like it.
Edit to add...Depends on the length of barrel as far as the vent rib is concerned.

^That's for an 18" bead sight CYL bore... hardly what OP is looking for.

I would only add that, at least at one time, the thought was that you should not shoot steel shot from the fixed full choke barrel. It will either need to be expanded to a modified or a rem choke installed.

I had a 30" full choke barrel on my Wingmaster and years ago I bought a 28" Rem choke barrel. There was all sorts of stuff going around the time about bulged barrels resulting from shooting steel through an older full choke barrel. I'm not sure if that's what holds true today though.

^I have a new WM barrel (for sale in my sig, btw) that has a full choke for shooting steel.

Remington no longer sells fixed choke or non ribbed field barrels. You can have choke tubes retro fitted to an older fixed choke barrel, but very probably not with RemChokes because they have a rather large diameter. That 28" Wingmaster barrel with the RemChokes is a decent deal. Currently $240+ plus shipping from Remington.
I hate to burst your bubble, but that is not a mahogany stock. Probably walnut.

Stock is walnut.

And it is going to be a lot easier to get what you want by picking up a Remchoke barrel in the length you want. If you really, really want a non vent rib barrel fixed choke barrrel they are out there used. I wouldn't be locked into a 30" full choke. If a 28" modified came along it would be my personal preferece.

I dont know much about wood so that doesnt surprise me. Thts what the ebay seller said so i took him for his word. It was only 25$ so i made out alright anyway. I have found a fixed full non rib 30" and a fixed full non rib 28" on ebay, both for 145, which seems like a pretty good deal.

One thing to keep in mind on 870 barrels:
Most of the barrels you see are Express barrels and they lack the magazine cap detent on the front of the barrel support ring that the Wingmaster and Police models have.

Without the detent, the magazine cap will vibrate loose.
If you buy an Express barrel you'll need to come up with a method of retaining the magazine cap.
The best method is to buy a Remington 1100 wave washer and put it on the tube before screwing on the mag cap:

I just like em. I had a Ithaca M37 growing up, and that look just does it for me. The only thing id like better is a non VR barrel with a Poly choke and a Cutts Comp
