What should .223 cost now (Oct 2013)?

It's just the laquer buildup (or whatever they put on the outside of the steel cases) that I was attempting to address
Current production Tula has a very thin polymer coating that doesn't come off.

How about that Ultramax ammo I bought? Is it safe? I did some looking around online and there seems to be a huge number of gun blowups and injuries. Can't seem to win!

Has anyone here had experiences with this ammo?

I do not to buy reloaded ammo.

But there's now way there is a "huge number" of gun blowups from it.

...cheap Russian steel crap...

My ARs love the "cheap Russian steel crap". Just finished a 3 gun shoot today in fact. I have in the neighborhood of ~1,600 rounds of "cheap Russian steel crap" through this rifle since the last detail strip. I don't do anything more than a squirt of CLP and a bore snake after a match.

I've never had a stuck case and I've never had a FTE or FTF with the Tula .223.

For 3 gunning, the ammo is accurate enough (8" steel plate out to ~250yds or so) and I'm not crying over leaving brass on the field after a match.

If I'm looking for bench rest accuracy, then better quality brass ammo is the answer. But, bench rest is not everyone's goal.

Trust my, the problems I have witnessed (and read about, and read aobut, and read about, and seen videos of) have nothing at all to do with bench rest anything.

I hope your luck continues.

Regarding pricing; I bought a case of 55gr PMC Bronze for $389 (out the door) this weekend at the Knob Creek machinegun shoot. Hopefully the prices keep trickling down.

Around here, most .223 is going for around $10 a box (20), or 50 cents a round. You can get bulk for 40-45 cents depending on the quantity.

Now, without intending to restart what always turns into an endless debate, I'm talking about new manufacture, commercial, non Russian, brass cased ammo. Tula and other's of its like are cheaper, around 30 to 35 cents a round. But I will NOT shoot them in my AR.

I have used the Ultramax stuff in my older Mini-14 without a problem, but that rifle eats most anything without malfunction.

Just bought some Federal XM193 and Federal XM855LC (can with strippers) for 50 cents per round here at my only local Walmart.

You know something is wrong when you can go to WM and a 20 rd box of .30-06 cost about the same as a 20 rd box of "premium" hunting 5.56/.223.

IMHO, they should run about $.25 a rd. I think I need a good 5.56 bolt gun - costs to much to have AR fun these days.

Which two specific rounds are you comparing when you say they cost about the same ( .30-06 and 5.56)?

There were two .30-'06 boxes - Remington and Winchester 150 gr "generic" stuff; IIRC, The Winchester Super-X was somewhere around $17.9? and the Remington was about a dollar more. The 5.56 (.223) was Federal "premium" something......V-Shock? Anyway, it was a 20 rd box and it was a few cents shy of $20.

The local Academy sports had boat loads of .223 / 5.56 in today.

$8.99 for American Eagle 55gr FMJ
$9.99 for Independence 55gr FMJ
$9.99 for Federal XM193
$9.99 for Federal XM855
$11.99 for Winchester 5.56mm 55gr FMJ
and the list goes on...

I try not to pay more than $8 a box, but when it's in stock and packed on the shelf, it's hard to resist.

Last weekend at the gunshow I was able to buy reloads from a reputable vendor for $.36/rd. They were selling in bags of 50rds for $18 so I bought a few. That's basically the cheapest I've seen recently for brass ammo.

Walmart sells the Tula223 for about $5.47/20 IIRC, so that's about $.28/rd but that is steel case.
