Current production Tula has a very thin polymer coating that doesn't come off. It's just the laquer buildup (or whatever they put on the outside of the steel cases) that I was attempting to address

How about that Ultramax ammo I bought? Is it safe? I did some looking around online and there seems to be a huge number of gun blowups and injuries. Can't seem to win!
Has anyone here had experiences with this ammo?
...cheap Russian steel crap...
'My ARs love the "cheap Russian steel crap". Just finished a 3 gun shoot today in fact. I have in the neighborhood of ~1,600 rounds of "cheap Russian steel crap" through this rifle since the last detail strip. I don't do anything more than a squirt of CLP and a bore snake after a match.
I've never had a stuck case and I've never had a FTE or FTF with the Tula .223.
For 3 gunning, the ammo is accurate enough (8" steel plate out to ~250yds or so) and I'm not crying over leaving brass on the field after a match.
If I'm looking for bench rest accuracy, then better quality brass ammo is the answer. But, bench rest is not everyone's goal.
You know something is wrong when you can go to WM and a 20 rd box of .30-06 cost about the same as a 20 rd box of "premium" hunting 5.56/.223.
IMHO, they should run about $.25 a rd. I think I need a good 5.56 bolt gun - costs to much to have AR fun these days.
Which two specific rounds are you comparing when you say they cost about the same ( .30-06 and 5.56)?
