If .223 ammo prices went up to let's say $2.00 per round, and I had not stocked up, shooting .223 would not be as much fun anymore.

My local Dicks has UMC .223 ammo at $7.98 for a box of 20. i.e., approx. 40 cents per round, with no shipping charge because I pick it up local. I do, however, have to pay 7% sales tax.

Is it a good time to stock up on .223?

I am thinking recreation not SHTF

I'm starting to think so, and I don't even have a rifle in .223. If things ever got nasty, there would be a lot of .223 rifles in use and ammo would be nice to have. Got a bunch of .223 brass in the tumbler right now.

It's never a bad idea to stock up on ANY ammo, in my opinion. Protip: stop buying ammo retail. It's much cheaper online. Aimsurplus is a fave of mine.

Dunham's Sports

$5.49 +salestax / 20 rds, Wolf, 55gr, non-reloadable, no limit. I bought 20 boxes. Can't reload good brass this cheaply.

From a cost standpoint, stock up now. All ammo, not just .223.

The dollar is declining in purchasing power. Commodities are rising in price as denominated in dollars: Oil, copper, other metals. For that matter, steel prices have quadrupled in the last eight or so years.

Ergo, to wit and therefore, bullets, powder and cartridge cases will continue to rise in price.

Probably the best way, long haul, is to stock up on components and take up reloading. That pretty much takes the cost of brass out of the equation.

I shoot Silver Bear..$3.95 or less a box...I try to get 2-3+ boxes per week....So far I am ok...

Its been about .30-.40 cents a round for a year now, I don't see any signs of movement. With the troops pull outs next year in the mid east it should start to come down as the DOD orders less.

Prices have gone down in the last few months , so its high time to stock up now. I personal dont have a .223 rifle. All my semis are of comblock surplus.

I don't have a crystal ball so I have no idea where ammo prices will be in a year. They are starting to fall across the board. I am rebuilding my stash. If the Obamanator gets reelcted in couple of years, who knows what will happen? Can't hurt to get it while you can.

there are better deals online.

pmc is at $309 per k and that is good quality ammo, i shoot it almost exclusively.

Check out Palmetto state armory, they have several good brands of ammo for less that .40 cents a round.

I've begun stocking up .223 steel case since it's often 20 cents a round or less. Fortunately my ArmaLite loves the stuff and I figure the more rounds my dollar can buy the better if that bad day ever comes.

Also buying Federal 45ACP, 9MM and .22LR value pack at Walmart because it works very well for me.

ammo prices seem to be falling still, but like Art said, commodities are going through the roof.

that situation won't last long. This may be the best chance to buy ammo.

BUY ammo...
BUY magazines, they are dirt cheap right now ( if you lived through the last mag. ban you understand...).... practice as often as you can afford.

Even if prices go lower, you will still be sitting pretty...
Ammo , when properly stored, will last for decades. The price per/round may go down slightly more... but I don't see the price falling throught the floor.

And as far as plinkin' or SHTF... I'd spend the extra $ and get good stuff...NOTE 1200 rds..http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=9017... or http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=9019

I add something to my stock every week...this weekend 9mm, 45, 22 and 7.62x39....next week I'd like to pick up some 380, 223, and of course more 45.:p

.223 is coming down. I have noticed a decrease in the last 6 months. You can get .223 for about 32 cents a round if you look for it. Gunbroker has it look for Northern Firearms you can call them and they will be 299 for 1k with 20 shipping. On a side note I can reload Hornady Vmax for about 22 cents a round. cost 90cents at the local sporting goods store.

$8+ a box for UMC ammo is no deal. PMC for $6 a box is a good deal and can be found if you watch out for it.

Just got 1000rds of Ferderal XM193 delivered to my door for $290.00 There are very good deals out there you just gotta look
