Looking to acquire a rifle in 17 HMR, but not sure what to get. Likely a bolt action model, although I have seen some lever guns out there. Savage....CZ?
Need some help!

17hmr

I went with the CZ-American combo this year.17HMR,22Mag 22LR.installed yo-dave kit, consistent 12 oz trigger pull, great gun for the price.

I have had a Savage 93 R17 bull barrel/stainless for several years. It is a nice looking gun. The Accutrigger is pretty decent. Adjusted to the lightest pull it breaks cleanly at 2-3 lbs.
Like any 17 HMR it is not great at longer ranges on windy days, but it shoots close to MOA out to 125 yards or so. Great on ground hogs & crows, a little light for coyotes. Probably too much for squirrels unless you restrict yourself to head shots.

CZ 455 would be my first choice, second place would be a tie between Savage and Marlin.

I have a Savage 93 (vb?) bull barrel with thumb hole stock and a CZ 452 American in 17 hmr. Both are bone stock. The Savage wears a 6x18 AO scope and the CZ is topped with a 2x7. Triggers were left at factory settings and both are very nice. I have no idea of the pull weight.
The CZ walks all over the Savage. Aside from the obvious fit and finish differences the little CZ shoots circles around the Savage regardless of the ammo. Plus, it's easy to carry.
The only shortcoming my CZ has is a sporadic feeding issue that I think is magazine related. I'm sure there is an easy fix but I've never bothered. The Savage has never had any issues other than its not as accurate as the CZ and I stopped wasting ammo on it quite some time ago.

For the life of me, I can't figure out where my post went.... it disappeared. Anyway, here's a synopsis of it...

I have a Savage 93R BTVS. They're pretty reasonably priced, but I think you have to fool with them a bit to get them to shoot well. I sent mine off to a Savage specialist in Idaho (name available on request) and he smoothed and lightened the action even more, glass bedded the receiver, re-crowned the barrel, lapped the bore very lightly, installed a very nice scope base, and wow... what an incredible improvement. Yes, there's a little bit of money in it, but not much. It is awesomely accurate and has pretty much zero recoil. It's a lot of fun to shoot. It also definitely prefers the 20 grain XTP loads.

I've also heard all good things about the CZ... it may be better out of the box, but I have no experience there.

Here's what mine looks like now:

I started out to get a Savage about 2 years ago and could find the one I wanted at the time. Ended up with a deal on a CZ 452 varminter when they discontinued them. It loves the Hornady 17 V-Max....just under 2" at 200 yards. I'm happy.

That is a NICE looking setup!
I'd like to know what you have into it if you care to share.
You can PM me......

BTW....there are two threads on this topic in close proximity to each other!

i own a Savage 93 in .22 WMR and a CZ 455 in .22LR. they're both fine rifles and very accurate, but last week i decided to order a .17 HMR and i went with another Savage 93. it mainly came down to the fact that the Savage was $200 cheaper.

if you go CZ, i'll second the YoDave trigger kit. i think my Savage and CZ could both benefit from being bedded.

You did not mention a budget but Anschutz and Cooper make some finely crafted rifles in the 17HMR and shoot very well to boot. They have some nice lumber on them and the triggers are fine from the factory an user serviceable. Having several HMR's those 2 are my favorites. Both of them are wearing Zeiss 6.5x20's.

I have a Savage with bull barrel and thumb hole stock and it is the bomb diggity. Even with the crappy combo scope (Cabela's package), it will hit a dime at 100 yards easily. The Accu-Trigger took some getting used to, but I love it now.

one of my posts is gone from this thread

actually, nevermind. it looks like there are two 17 HMR threads near the top of the forum and i've gotten them confused.

After having both a Savage and a CZ I prefer the CZ. They are equal accuracy wise but the Savage feels clunky and unrefined.

Thanks for all the input! This could be a tough decision, but now I have some suggestions to check out. Beautiful looking guns folks!
