Hey folks i have 3# of aa7 and am wondering what its best 9mm application would be. Would it work best with heavier bullets to keep volume low since it slower? Ive been wanting to try 160gr lead in 9mm, would it work good for that? Thanks for any info.

I can't imagine it would. It's to slow and the 160gr bullet is to long. I can't see how you could cram enough AA7 in the case and get a bullet that long seated with out a compressed load.

The 160gr bullet should be to long to get any accuracy from the riflings that most 9mms have anyways I would think.

AA#5 would be the slowest I would use in a 9mm with heavy for caliber bullet and that would be a stretch.

It appears I'm still having email problems. I am trying to get you a picture of the page in Lyman's 45 edition where they have data for 158gr bullets.

It would work with your 160gr also.

Well that didn't work so

Lyman's 45 edition 1972
158 gr cast 358311 #2 alloy

Bullseye 3.0 @ 869 to 3.5 @961 fps
Red Dot 3.0 @ 858 to 3.6 @ 963 fps
Unique 3.5 @ 883 to 4.5 @ 1037 fps
Herco 3.6 @ 840 to 4.6 @ 1010 fps

Accuracy load Bullseye 3.0 gr @ 869 fps

It apparently was used at one time but there is no data for anything as slow as AA7.

I load my wife's 9mm with a 124gr copper plated bullet and AA#7. I don't have the load data in front of me. She likes it.

Been there and done that one. (several times).

Walkalong, I'll bet you have too.

Boilers, generators, chillers, transformers, whoohaa...

Nothing like that middle of the night call, hey we just lost......

Back to the fun though, my bud has used #5 for a number of loads and really likes it a lot in his Sig. He is shooting the lighter bullets though. Myself, I have used all of the Accurate handgun powders pretty much since they came out, and if they have data listed for a particular weight bullet, it is usually fair to say it works halfway decent. Like anything else though, your use and firearm are the determining factors. I cannot offer anything for the 9mm since I don't have one, but I use their powders in everything else from there up to the 454.

Use the listed data and give it a try. Worst case you learned whether it works for you or not.

Always work up your own load and
always follow safe procedures.

The only time I used A#7 for 9mm.

I use AA#7 for darn near everything in 9mm, from 100 grain Power Points to 124 gr XTPs and every weirdness in between. It works very well for me. I also use it for cast and plated - what bullets are you looking to try? BTW, the 160s...I have never seen 160 grain bullets for 9mm, so i have zero practical experience with that one, sorry.

I've got a bunch of published data with AA7.

Hornady XTP's - 115's, 124's, and 147's

Nosler Jacketed - 90's & 115's

Sierra Jacketed - 95's, 115's & 125's

Speer Jacketed - 115's, 124's, & 147's

And some misc. lead loads.

There is lots of data for AA7, just do some published searching and you'll find plenty of data to work with. It is a slow burner, but not too slow for 9mm, provided you use the data as published. In other words, don't try to down load it like with faster burning powders, and it will perform just fine. It's a full pressure powder, not a plinking target type.

I bought 16 pounds of pulldown AA#7 powder a few years ago. It was from 9mm SMG ammo. I use it in .357 Magnum, but it will obviously also work in 9mm if you load it hot.

+1 for loading it hotter. If you download it, excessive unburned powder could be an issue.

I have only tried it in .45acp, and my experience invloved lots of noise and muzzle flash. A lot of "bark" if you will. As another poster stated, #7 is best for the .357. Or maybe 10mm.
