Do any of you guys have dealings with wood stocks for AR's?
I'm entertaining the idea of putting a wood kit on an AR I plan use for coyote hunting but I've never seen any of the wood kits in person. So I'm just wondering if their just for looks or if their well made and fairly durable.
I'm specifically looking at the Boyds stocks.

Any insight or information would be appreciated, thanks in advanced.

Just to be clear I am currently leaning toward the Boyds laminated stocks, but I'm certainly open to other suggestions if you can personally recommend them, or know of some common problem with the Boyds. But honestly my main concern is, well, wood breaks and I do intend on using this as a hunting gun so some abuse is expected. It will not be a range gun so I probably wouldn't worry have to worry about heat, which I hadn't thought about.
Again my main concern is the grip or stock breaking/cracking.

Laminated stocks are much stronger - it's basically decorative plywood with few to no voids, in veneers glued together by alternating the wood grain in alternating directions.

Basically, it's 1 1/2" plywood - and thicker beams of that hold up the roofs of a lot of buildings in America, including churches.

What might be of more significance is the added weight - as a material it has a lot of bonding agents, resin, glue, whatever to hold the layers together, with a lot of solid core. It adds up. Most purchasers note the stocks tend to balance a nose heavy carbine when compared to an adjusting stock version, but it does it by adding bulk and being fixed.

In terms of it being a performance enhancer when carried in the field, it's a net loss from the weight aspect and does nothing to enhance accuracy, which is somewhat moot, or reliability, which isn't in question anyway. That leaves it's only feature - it's wood grain - and the ensuing discussion is basically a matter of taste.

It's sort of a Jeep Grand Wagoneer thing.

I always like the looks of the FAL that had the wooden butt stock. If I were to do something with an AR along those lines, that's what I'd go for...add some rugged looking metal hardware etc. But that's all just for looks.

Thanks Tirod that's helpful, I didn't know they were made of a plywood like wood. I would think that would make it much less likely to break or crack, which is my concern. The weight I don't care about at all, honestly I hope it adds a good lb or 2. I just want it be fairly solid and durable.

i ordered a ironwood walnut rifle set about a week and i/2 ago i will let you know when i get it mounted .

That would be great!
The iron wood is definitely on my list, I have been debating between them and boyds but leaning towards boyds but if you recommend the iron wood i'm certainly open to them.
