I'm new to the AR build'em yerself hobby, so I haven't quite figured out all the ins and outs of the parts on the market.

Right now, I'm looking for a quality AR adjustable stock for a project. I've seen a wide range of brand names and prices for the stocks, but I've no idea what the relative quality is.

Anyone have any suggestions as to a good stock to buy that is well constructed and stable?

This will be for a carbine/sbr (16-14.5 barrel) if it makes a difference.

thanks!

This should probably be in "rifles"

Magpul 93B (actually anything Magpul, top of the line stuff)

LMT SOPMOD stock is very nice.

The VLTOR stock is one step down, but decent.

Beyond that, in my experience, it's mostly (not all) cheap flimsy stuff.

you can get the old style metal collapsible stocks from essentialarms.com but they're a little more expensive than the current plastic

I was just looking at the essentialarms ones online today -- other than the positions on the buffer tube, what's with the $90 of difference between the "Military Dimension Stock" and the "Aluminum Stock?" Is it the coating? Polishing rough castings smooth?

kaylee, i think it's a retro thing... like, replicas of 1970s era stocks
but i don't know for sure. i just know that when i asked back in the summer, the guy said there were only like, 50 left or something and would never be any more

Taliv -- I talked with 'em today.

The answer is that the tube is a hair bigger in the military pattern stocks, though they'll both fit into a standard receiver. Anyhow, they say the military pattern is for replicating the ol' XM series and the like, and the just-plain-aluminum are for putting on modern "using" guns for folk that want tough metal stocks instead of plastic.

They're holding one of the former for me till after Christmas. :)
