I just came home from a trip to the LGS. I took a friend who had intended to buy a VP-9, like mine. I bought mine about three months ago. I paid just under $600. The exact same gun today goes out the same door for $719.

My M&P 9c was $429 when I bought it in 2012. Today it would cost $500. My Shield was $379. It's now $429. Even the SD9VE is $359.

Nothing was negotiable.

Is it like this all over?

I'm of the opinion that firearms prices are over inflated and the good times (sell every thing you can make) enjoyed by the firearms industry are coming to a gradual end.

Is it that your VP9 has the factory luminescent sights, and the one you looked at with your friend had Trijicon night sights on it? The prices sound correct for that scenario.

Or did you happen to be at Gander Mountain, because their prices are lame.

The VP9 recently got written up as the gun of the year in one of the magazines (Guns & Ammo?), so maybe it's gotten a surge of demand that drove the price up? Don't know about the other increases.

My problem is with the people reselling their used guns at the same price or higher than a new one.

Why?
I've got it, you want it, that's the price. What's wrong with that?
I understand selling a gun that is in high demand and low supply at higher prices, but selling a used glock at $550 when I buy one new for $490 from my local dealer is puzzling to me.

I'm having the same problem finding a ruger sp101 for decent price. Buds has them around 510-524$. My LGS want upwards of 650$ for them.

sometimes they have extras included. where if you bought your own extras brand new, it would be much more. although i have seen what you are saying once in a while, and i don't get it either.

A course in Econ 101 will solve that problem for you.
A sale is made when a willing seller and a willing buyer make a transaction at a mutually agreeable price.
No coercion, no distress. And sometimes, not much knowledge/homework on the part of the buyer...but that is not the seller's problem.

Bottom line: anyone can ask any price they like for anything. If there are no willing purchasers...guess what? Either the seller drops his price or the item goes unsold.
If it sells at the asking price...that is the free market at work...like it or not. Much like the frequent discussions we have on .22LR ammo. Yes, I'd like to buy 550 round boxes of Federal at Wal-Mart for $13.84 like I used to. Apparently, someone else is willing to pay a bunch more, or pay their buddy to hide it and call them when it comes in.

When I get desperate enough for .22LR ammo, maybe I'll join them.
Don't hold your breath. :)

I am especially referring to ads on armslist that have guns with rust and pitting.

At the LGS in my area full MSPR is what they are asking and they won't negotiate. On used guns there is some negotiation.

Your LGS has high prices. Around here...VP9 $585, Shield $369, XD $425 (I think I've actually seen less, but don't want to spit that out without verifying), PPQ $549, Gen 4 Glocks $540..... Just bought a PPS today for $539.

It isn't "selling" the used Glock for $550 that bugs me; it's the ASKING of $550 for a $490 gun that bugs me. I hate to be thought of as stupid, and that's what the seller thinks I am asking a stupid price that he knows is way overinflated.
There's no doubt I price a gun aggressively when I offer it for sale. But I always research before I hit on a price and sometimes I'll ask at the upper limit and sometimes, if I just want to blow it out, I'll ask at the bottom of the range. But I know what other guns like it are selling for; I know what I have in it; and I know what's a reasonable profits...I try not to be greedy and I never treat someone I'm dealing with as stupid.
And I guess greedy pricing is why I see the same guns offered over and over on Armslist (and I've done okay on that) and Gunbroker. But hey, it ain't my problem. I'm patient enough to wait for my price before I buy.

It's simple... Don't buy it if you don't like the price. If you can find the firearm for less elsewhere, why would it bug you? I've sold several guns on armslist. Many locals contact me to tell me that they can get the gun elsewhere for less. My response is "then why are you contacting me then?"

Just like LGS and brick and mortar retail store, I don't sell or set my prices based on internet prices. I look at what others, if anyone, are selling theirs for, and what the gun is going for with tax at the local LGS. Online retailers buy bulk, so they're able to sell well below retail. LGS do normally by in huge bulk, and they have overhead. I'm selling face to face in person and not online. I set my price just below what other local F2F comparables on ArmsList as well as what LGS are selling for which may be $25-$50-$100 more than online prices... I've never had a problem making a quick sale, and the money I make normally goes towards funding the purchase of another firearm..

My advice to you (and anyone else who thinks that a number marked on a gun is a personal insult if it's not the number you expect) is to spend less effort and time looking for ways to be offended when no offense is intended.

If a seller asks $500 for a used Hi-Point, it's his/her prerogative. It's his gun and he can list it for whatever he wants. If your $500 is worth more to you than his Hi-Point is worth to him then you need to realize that the price tag was not written for you and therefore could not possibly be any sort of an insult directed at you. Just move along and save your offended feelings for when someone actually does insult you.

Around here everything seems high, and revolvers are ridiculous. On occasion, can get sd9ve on sale for $319, or an M&P Shields for $400, which isn't too bad, but can't even buy a Taurus 85 or Charter Arms .38 for under $450.

Occasionally I can find a really good deal on GunAuction. All my top bids are at least $125 less than I can buy locally. Add in shipping and FFL and I save a little under $100.

Trying to sell locally a Shield 9mm right now for $400. Has 3 magazines and is LNIB. All paperwork. Ad says that I'll throw in a LaserLyte for another $60.

I get an email from a guy who says, "I can buy that gun for $365". Nothing else. I don't get it.

Beveaux... He can. Maybe even cheaper. BUT, why even send the email? Move along....no need to comment.

Send him back an email that says: "You are mistaken. You may be able to buy a gun just like this one for $365, but if you want to buy this gun it will cost you $400." :D
