Can you get a map of the area? You can study that, does it have any natural funnels to the layout? You can hang a stand around on of those natural funnels. I would still-hunt the first time I was out there that way you could get an idea of the layout, and what it looks like then next time you...
I would check out the Steven 200, look at the .243 Winchester. I would also look at the 30-30 Lever action as well. I like the 336 Marlin my self and thats what im using to hunt with this year.
The 30-30 would work fine for Deer, and Hogs as well.
The 243 would work well for deer and...
I used to jump shoot ducks with a couple buddies. I always missed. My buddies would get 1-2 a peice everytime we would go out and see ducks. Once in awhile we would get a goose.
We would walk sloughs, and rivers, sneaking up on em. Once and awhile we would jump shoot on a big local...
My AR-15. Which I have allready set up with my LBE, ready to go. Significant other would probably have to use my Ak-74 Clone. Which would work well for her with the Cobra sight, just place and shoot for the most part.
I would look at the Stevens 200 line of rifles they have short and long actions. I would maybe look at the 30-06 chambering, for you son you can always use the
Remington Managed recoil factory ammo if needed. Or look at a 25-06 or 243, which would work for ground hog/ rockchuck etc...
Yeah I have a M96 that is great, made by Husquavarna in 1943 love that rifle, would never do anything to butcher it though. I like the CZ rifles , the 6.5x55 Swede just seems like a versatile round for me, for Deer and the possible Elk.
I wish I could find one of the Remington Classics, but...
Okay looking at buying a new hunting rifle. Looking at the 6.5x55 Swede, I know that Ruger still makes a rifle, and that CZ Makes a rifle. I found a Howa but now its gone, so don't know if I can get on don't see one on Legacy Sports website.
Out of those three which one do you know is the...
I would either buy a 16" or 20". I own a 20" and will buy a 16" someday, but not in a big hurry to. I would get one with a flat top upper, and get the carry handle sight.
Shoot it with the carry handle sight to get the basics down. You will be suprised how well you will be able to shoot...
If you feel comfortable with the shotgun, that would be more than enough for a cougar. I understand the concern with your young child as well. Also with smaller animals, like smaller dogs are a great target for Cougars as well.
Ive been going through the same thing with hunting in Texas this year. I have a 336 Marlin in 30-30 WIN. I live in Houston, I plan on probably hunting toward the Sam Houston Natinal Forest. I also have the chance for Hogs as well. I figure with the Hornady Lever Evolution I can feel...
I good book I read about this is GUN DOG. It is an old book, he doesnt advocate
beating the dog. Has some good methods which I think have worked well.
Title of the book to look for is GUN DOG
I use 30-30 Winchester, right now Im going to handload some 150 flatnose bullets from Sierra, for the season this year. Also I do want to try that Hornaday Lever Evolution 160 Grain loads.
Next rifle is probably going to be a 257 Weatherby Mag, for hunting over vast fields. I was...
At the moment Im getting into reloading, I have a LEE hand press. It works pretty well so far I have just cleaned up some necks on some .223 brass, primed the cases and the same for 30-30case.
Right now Im waiting on on some .38spc .357 Dies to reload some .38 Spec cases I have laying...
Like some one stated already the 300 mag would be ideal if you shots were going to be at longer ranges.
I would chose the 30-30, loaded with some 170 grain bullets, Or the Hornady Lever Evolution 160 Grains, if you feel you might have a shot out to 300yds. You will be served well by the...
I would look at the Weatherby Vanguard, should give you good groups at 100yds with good ammo. I belive it is guarenteed from the factory. Non of those will be 1000yd competion rifles. But they would really in reality make great hunting rilfes.
I would get the Vanguard. What calibers were...
In North America
.22 rimfire, small game
.223 or 5.56x45 varmits,
6.5x55 Swede big game, and larger varmits
338-06 Large game, like Elk, Big Bears
30-30 Win big game, hogs, etc, quick handling, deer, smaller bears
Or
In say Africa
.223
7x57 Mauser
.375 H&H...
Your .223 would work pretty good, might get a little heavy if you have to walk a while but should work well. Just use some ammo thats accurate.
Also concealment is important as some one said. Instead of using road kill or live bait for example you could use a stuffed animal, ive heard of...
I think that rugged bullet construction is important when choosing what to shoot for Elk, maybe more than the peticular cartrigde. I would rather shoot an Elk with a 160 Grain bullet from a 6.5x55 Swede than say a light 140 grain bullet from a 7mm remington Mag.
If I had to pick on rifle...
I think they would consider the Salt lick or mineral lick as a bait, I dont know for sure but sounds like that it something almost that they need as in food wise.
Far as scents go, I dont know much of what would work since most are taylored towards white tails. I dont know if that makes...
