    Where can I find a 429215?

I'd like to try a recipe for 44 magnum for my rifle. It calls for a #429215 cast lead bullet propelled by 9 grains of Titegroup. But I'm having trouble finding a supply of 429215 bullets. Titegroup is also scarce but still obtainable. Anyone know of a source for these specific lead cast bullets?

    44 mag case not expanding?

I just ran some 44 mag rounds through my Rossi 92 lever gun. I used a 165 lead round nose projectile powered by 6.5 grains of Universal. It generates 10,350 psi. This is from the latest edition of the Lee Precision loading manual. Here's the problem. The cases are exceedingly blackened after...

    Rossi peep sights

What peep sight can be mounted on the top of a Rossi 92 receiver? I mean without drilling and tapping.

A very pleasant 44 mag round

I found this data set in Lee's Modern Reloading Second Edition. A 165 grain lead RNFP bullet motivated by 6.5 grains of Universal powder in a 44 Remington Magnum case. I'm going to use it in a Rossi 92 chambered for 44 mag; the rifle weighs a little less than 6 pounds. Unless my math is bad...

    Reloading math

I've been running some numbers for .44 remington magnum for a lever gun. I did several bullet weights using Universal. 165 gr, 185 gr, and 200 gr. The 185 gr bullet motivated by 6.4 grains of Universal would be less than 3 ft/lb of recoil engergy. The rifle's weight is 6.0 lbs. I've gotten...

    Is Marlin 1894 peep sight

Is the Marlin 1894 tapped on top of the receiver for mounting a peep sight (like a Williams)?

Ongoing trouble with 30-30 sizing/decapping dies

I tumbled, cleaned and lubricated (Lee case lubricant) some once fired 30-30 cases. I know the provenance of the cases; factory loads fired my own rifle. None of them could be run through the sizing/decapping die except by force sufficient to damage the case. I bought another die, cleaned it and...

    Peep sight for Marlin 336

I'd like to put a basic Williams peep sight on my 2000 era 336. It currently has a hooded front sight and standard buckhorn at the back. Can anyone walk me through this? I'm particularly wondering whether the front sight is going to be high enough and therefore need replacement as well.

    Sizing die gremlins

I set up a 30-30 sizing/decapping die and it seized the brass. I extracted the now, dimpled brass, tossed it, and then took apart the die to see what's what. It was pretty gummed up with a build-up of old lubricant. Nothing a good cleaning wouldn't solve. So I thought. Even when clean as a...

44-40 vs 357 mag for lever gun

Been thinking about a lever gun. Thinking has evolved to an itch, and as we know, itches need scratching. Now I know I want lever rifle chambered for a pistol cartridge. For my purposes I've narrowed it to 44-50 or 357 mag. For 44-50 I need to buy a die set; I already have 38/357 dies. Apart...

persistent rust in barrel after cleaning

The use of extremely hot soapy water and best drying efforts notwithstanding, my Hawken rifle always has some rust in the barrel. Right after cleaning I run some clean patches down the barrel. Then I stand it upright in a warm, dry room. After a while, I run a patch with Bore Butter or T 1000...

OAL and crimping and other vexations

I've been loading some 44 spl. It's a plain Jane recipe; 6.7g Unique and a 200gr jacketed projectile. The OAL for this round is listed as 1.495. But I was getting damaged cases when seating the bullet. So I expanded it a bit more. Which made me think I should crimp it a half turn more. Which...

    Shameful secret

I've been shooting for over 50 years and have to admit I have never used a peep sight on a rifle. Until now. I mounted a tang peep sight on my Pedersoli Sharps. However, I'm a little uncertain about the front sight. I still have the factory mounted blade sight in front. My question is this. Do...

5744 turns my Sharps into a smoke pole

Literally. I just ran off ten rounds of 45-70; a 405 gr projectile propelled by a minimum load of 5744 smokeless powder. Except that it isn't. Smokeless, that is. In fact it seems like a muzzle loader after each shot. What's with all the smoke? What would be causing that?

45-70 expander die giving me fits

I have a Lee dieset for 45-70. Here's the problem. I adjust the flare to accept a bullet without shaving it too badly. But if I flare it even a whisker more, the bullet will get pushed into the case. It's nearly impossible to get it set right. I'm at the point of getting another expander --...

    45-70 bullet question

I have a recipe from Lyman's manual which calls for a 405 gr bullet and 31.5 gr of IMR4198; a starting load. At first I couldn't find the recommended #457193 (a cast lead FN). But I was able to get some 405 gr cast bullets in a WLN with gas checks on them. However, the WLN, seems to seat 0.110...

    cleaning an 1874 sharps' barrel

I just got a sharps rifle and cannot find a cleaning rod long enough for it. Ideally I'd like to use some kind of carbon or wood rod in concert with a 45-70 bore guide. The bore guides seem to be readily available but not extra long cleaning rods. Any suggestions?

    cast bullets not fitting brass

I'm loading some 45-70. The bullets are 405 grain, 458, cast lead flat nose. The cases are once fired and have gone through my sizer/de-capper die. First two seated ok, but shaved a little of the lead; there are small burrs on the mouth of the case. But the next two were way too loose. In...

Are cast LFP and cast LFN bullets interchangeable?

I have a recipe that calls for cast LFP bullets but I see only cast LFN for sale. Can the LFN be substituted for the LFP?

will lack of ammo deter gun purchase?

I've got my eye on a Sharps rifle. Anticipating its purchase, I started scanning the internet for ammunition or reloading components. I found neither. Now I'm thinking, why should I buy a rifle for which I can buy neither appropriate factory loads nor components. Anyone else putting off gun...
