Is Lee round ball mold ok?

I don't have any round ball molds. Maybe I can put a word in with Santa :scrutiny:. I DO have a Lee aluminum 3 cavity .44 bullet mold, though. I was surprised to hear nothing but positive remarks to the OP. I rarely use mine, and if I do, I usually cast one at a time. It's my favorite...

    Cartridge Lifespan

Watch for a lighter-colored ring near the base of the case, watch for cracks, and watch for obvious thinning at the mouth. I have brass for various rounds that has been shot by myself, my father, and my grandfather over 80 years. I check each case every time I load, discard what looks bad, and...

Finally tried cleaning with water...mixed feelings about it

I lived there for 8 years. You got a lotta somethings in your tapwater . It's the only place I ever lived where I never, under any circumstances drank tapwater. It wasn't rust, it was algae residue that immediately began growing on your gun :D.

Read Foxfire Vol. 5 for free!

I found 3 of them, including #5 at a secondhand store. I believe that's the same one that goes into detail on making powder. They're incredible books. My personal favorite is a guy making water pipe out of logs. He drills them with a homemade spade bit on a long stick, then carves one end of...

    Shooting Indoors

I used to shoot wax bullets with cartridge rounds, think I got it out of an American Rifleman digest. I just poured melted paraffin in a tray with waxpaper under it, and poked the primed case straight into it, forming a bullet in the neck of the case. I have this nagging in the back of my head...

    issues dissassembling remmy

There's a tool called a screw impact driver that I've thought about bringing up here before. I've used one as a mechanic for years to get painted-over, rusted, or otherwise impossible screws out. They always work. I have a Snap-On one, but Harbor Freight sells one on sale now for 5 bucks...

    Tra La La!!

I think I just peed on my leg a little. I need to cash in my membership here before I have one of every gun posted. I always new I wanted a Kentucky flinter. Then it was a Walker, then it was an ROA, then it was one of those Hickock revolvers, and now this. I may need to borrow someone's...

    Pietta Hickok Revolver Review

I have 2 Pietta '58 .44's, and they tell 2 very different stories. I'm assuming the blued one is older (they belonged to my father-in-law), because it seems to have all the issues. Pretty much everything on it could and should be tighter, except the trigger spring screw, which I still haven't...

    Cabela's Revolver Stolen in Shipping?

X 10 on that. My father-in-law worked in customer service for them, and has told me story after story of them making it right, regardless of the cost to them, and $230 is nothing. Before I read that the issue was resolved, I was going to say that I was fairly certain they'd take care of you...

    New Cap Lock Rifle

I buy 'em for my kids at dollar stores. They still have them as well as roll cap guns. I had one of those when I was a kid. When my father-in-law passed away, he had 2 in his house and some of the nephews wanted them. They had the hammer on one and the trigger on the other broken in 2...

    newbie

I'm an old timer at this. Almost 2 weeks ahead of you ;). I happen to have both a stainless and blued gun, one given to me by my father in law, and one I got when he passed away. I shot the stainless one first, and I'm glad I did. I was able to see where the fouling was, like in the bottoms...

Anyone assemble their gun with bore butter only?

I've looked all over the internet, and found lots of good info, but no real definitive answer for my question. The safest solution I can see is to get the gun absolutely clean and oil it with the oil of your choice, then clean the bore with alcohol before shooting. I found an interesting site...

Anyone assemble their gun with bore butter only?

OK. I've been doing a lot of shooting the last few days, and found these BP revolvers to be very common-sense. If I think it should work a certain way, it does. BTW I realized I had another '58 Remmy still in cosmoline when my father-in-law passed away, so I got out both. I loaded one with...

    Traditions Timber Ridge...Crap or keeper?

Can't answer your question, but I logged on to ask about Traditions in general. I was looking at a Kentucky rifle kit from them, around $200 IIRC. Interested in everybody's opinion of the thread. :D Steve.

Finally shot the durn thing (1858 Remington Pietta)

I went 'round in my head and on my reloading bench with this, and came back to: if Pietta's standard is based on BP, BP weighs over 20% more than Pyrodex, so the max load comes back down to about 21 grains :banghead:. While searching around, I did find this page-...

Finally shot the durn thing (1858 Remington Pietta)

From Pietta's website (owner's manual)- OK, I was going to ask on what friggin' planet you would ever need to check for 4 hundredths of an inch clearance on your ball if it was "seated firmly against" 15 grains of powder. But then I looked again at the load chart, and it also lists loads...

Finally shot the durn thing (1858 Remington Pietta)

I thought as much, but I had 2 things going I wasn't expecting- The charge seemed to be (and I'm still a little unclear on this one) TWICE what Pietta recommends, plus the ball seated deeper than I envisioned. I wonder if Pietta's recommended load is by weight ? I think next time...

Finally shot the durn thing (1858 Remington Pietta)

Ok. It wasn't exactly 2 to 1. It was more like 27, and I tweaked it to 30. I just tried the Lee scoops (no, I hadn't used them before), and went backwards. I got out the scoops, looked at the chart, and filled the proper one for 30 grains of Pyrodex P. I weighed this, and it weighed 30...
