I ordered an 1851 Navy from Cabela's last week along with a presentation box. When I got the shipment tonight (from UPS), there was a rifle sized cardboard box that had been cut in half and retaped back together. Someone else answered the door and signed for it but I picked it up all of a minute later so I'm sure it arrived in that condition. There is a packing label on the outside that says 10lbs. Inside the box I found only the presentation case (maybe 3lbs) and some advertising crap from Cabela's, plus the packing slip that states the revolver is supposed to be "in this shipment."

Has this happened to anyone before? Does Cabela's have some bizarre shipping policies that I'm not aware of? I'd like to think there is some reasonable explanation besides theft but I don't know what it could be.

Take a picture of the box and contents as it arrived. Email it to customer service. Call them and ask them what gives. Sounds to me like a damaged shipment. Make sure your shipping invoice says "box 1 of 1" and not "box 1 of 2". Take a look at the tracking numbers supplied by Cabelas to you.

You have a problem. If the shipment wasn't insured, and your 'agent' accepted the box without comment about the damage, you're out a gun.

It does indeed say 1 of 1. I hope it was insured, the Cabela's shipping scale does go according to price of items instead of weight or volume. This was during their $5 flat rate shipping for orders over $150 though, so I'm sure it was the cheapest they could get.

I'm really not keen on eating $230 (for the revolver + "starter kit") for goods paid for and not received. It was bought on a credit card so I guess I could try going through the bank as a last resort. I'll contact Cabela's first and see what they have to say, but I'm guessing that this is not their fault.

I'm a young guy but I've had great luck with shipments, this is the first serious issue I've had. Any tips would be appreciated.

Cabela's should have record of the serial number sold. File a Police Report of it having been stolen if it appears there's only the 1 of 1 box... and advise your CC company that you did not receive the merchandise you ordered/paid for (with a copy of your report). Who knows... m'be somewhere along the line, Cabela's may have a soft heart towards you, or someone's employee will start feeling the heat and claim they didn't know what box it came out of and return it?

Anytime you have to sign for something that was shipped via common carrier please inspect the packing and make the proper notations on the b/l, i.e., ctn. opened, quantity and damage to contents unknown.

Well, it's entirely possible it was stolen. People don't care who they steal from anymore. Hell, when I was working for the FBI (yeah, them) down in New Orleans somebody stole an HP desktop computer which was coming to me Airborne Express. Box and all. It just simply disappeared. Well, they caught the one that had 'shuffled' it off to one side and HP sent me another one overnight delivery and they dealt with the guy that got it. (Their people dealt with him)....Oh, they sent me some ink for my Photosmart 3310 All In One Printer and a few packs of photo paper as a way of just being nice to me.... I know Cabela's and I can tell you right now; they'll get to the bottom of it if you will just give them a little time....

I'm trying the Cabela's "live chat" right now. What amazes me is that the box was split open right down the middle and retaped. If you wanted to steal it discreetly it would have been much easier to open and retape an end...

Cabelas has some really good customer service, in my experience. They should make it right.

If Cabela's determines that it was one one of their people who stole it (doubtful) then it would be better for the guilty party if they had never been borned. Especially if you're a good customer that spend's a lot of money with them..Or just a little money on a regular basis....

Wow, it took all of 5 minutes for them to say they'd send out another one at no cost, and they declined twice to see my pictures. Makes me a little suspicious that it might have been sent out like that and they'd like to let me believe UPS is at fault. Oh well, at least I'm not out $230.

Thumbs up for their support.

I'm not surprised. Cabelas guarantees satisfaction. They've always bent over backwards for me. Glad to hear the outcome is positive.

Good..Hey, don't EVER be suspicous of Cabela's. I have been into cap and ball for many a year and I started with Cabela's and have remained a very loyal customer to them through all these years. They have NEVER let me down. Even right now as I type this you can believe that internal affairs at Cabela's has been briefed or are being briefed and they WILL launch a very through investigation. They do NOT like losing money and they stick by their customers and take care of them. That's why they're who they are...PS. Glad you came out alright....

Wow. That was a rollercoaster that ended on a high note. Seems they could track it and detect the location where things got shady. For their sake, I hope so.

Glad they were so helpful. These days you're more likely to hear a very depressing ending to a story like that.

Go, Cabela's!!

Makes me a little suspicious ...

In God We Trust...and Cabelas too!!!!! Seriously...I would never suspect Cabelas of underhandedness...they will bend over backwards to keep you satisfied! I've had them replace merchandise I didn't even buy from them...just because I'm a good customer and they want to keep it that way!!!!!!!!
If they said they sent the revolver out originally...they sent it!!!!

X 10 on that. My father-in-law worked in customer service for them, and has told me story after story of them making it right, regardless of the cost to them, and $230 is nothing. Before I read that the issue was resolved, I was going to say that I was fairly certain they'd take care of you immediately. Glad they did.

Someone sent me a pair of binoculars from Cabela's last year as a gift, and I ended up with a pair of electronic earmuffs instead. Cabela's got me an upgraded pair of binocs and told me to keep the earmuffs. I use both on a pretty regular basis.

They've got my business.

Steve.

That's typical Cabela's customer service from my experience.

I deal with UPS at work and I have had packages go out and then return the next day retaped and missing items or in a new carton . most of their help is part time. they have lost more stuff then ive had make it to the end user. i now pay more for fedex ground, but know it gets then in one piece.

redmanthat is the reason UPS initiated their mandatory overnight service for shipping handguns....so many were being stolen by employees!!!!!

That's the kind of support I've received from Cabela's when orders have arrived damaged. Great to do business with!

Good for Cabelas.

I was the acting Warehouse Manager of an organization once, among other titles, when I was young and the daily UPS guy offered to "lose" to me the cheap rifle cases I noted on his truck one day. I chastised him for it after confirming he was serious. And no doubt there woulda been a quid pro quo requested someday...

If you're shipping to, from, or within Canada use Purolator.

FYI, I had sold a set of sterling silver medallions on ebay for about $4,000 two years ago and shipped them via UPS (insured). The driver "left the package" at the end of the buyer's driveway - no signature. Paypal scooped the funds out of my account. I sued UPS in small claims court - as soon as their legal dep't got the statement of claim, the ponied up with the money. UPS does not have a good history of safe shipping. If it is really important, I use Fedex. They will never just leave a parcel without a signature.

I'm willing to bet that there was collusion between the driver and the buyer, because the buyer wasn't upset at all that the shipment "didn't arrive".
