Depends on the rim thickness of the ammunition you are using, and the rifles original headspace.
A “correctly“ headspace gun might not need a shim for “average” ammunition rim thickness, be loosely headspaced for thin rims, and gall the shims with thick rimmed ammo.

Unless the MG belt was linked… tracer, AP, incinderary, ball. or (better yet SLAP or Raufoss!)
The links have some value, but without a dedicated delinking tool taking the belts apart are a PITA

The lower rifle has an extended ring in front, and standard ring in back.
I believe that is how your rifle needs to be set up.
Extended rings can be used in the front or the back, or both front and back, depending on what part of the scope is in the way
The rings in the picture are not in correct alignment.
The ring on the right is the front ring.
The scopes objective bell goes on the left side of the ring on the right, do you see the scallop clearance cut?
