Happy 3-08 day.

I hope you celebrated with loved ones, huddled around your favorite .308 rifle, telling stories about the best cartridge ever made

Post reminded me I have a butchered Savage 95 commemorative in 308 hiding its shame in the back of my safe waiting for me to figure out if I can save it.

I didnt celebrate.
Only .308 I have is a Ruger #1A.
Would have, if i had an StG 58 clone

I have never worked up any interest in a 308. I don't hold any hard feelings for those that like it though. Just not my personal thing. My old 30-06 will does every thing it will it so why change?
Somebody has to make the obligatory “same thing with less recoil” comment… but it won’t be me. lol

Hard to go wrong with the .308. Of my four .308's, three are specialized target rifles, but also this trim sporter built on a Pre-64 M70 action with barrel made and fitted by Paul Marquart and stock by Bob Emmons. Bob is probably best known for his photography in Monty Kennedy's classic book on gunstock checkering and carving. I had know him for years before discovering he was also a master stockmaker and having this rifle built. Sadly, he was gone before I could get more of his beautiful work. I have three rifles chambered in .308 Winchester. I went for decades with zero, then an acquaintance gave me 664 rounds of .308 ammo, so of course that required a rifle. The first was a CZ 550FS. I really liked the build quality of the 550, the action and single set trigger, and got a chance to pick up a 550 Varmint (pictured below). The Varmint is a very satisfying gun to shoot, delivers 100-yard groups in the .2"-3" range with a variety of factory-loaded ammo, and due to the weight with the big Mauser action and heavy profile 26" barrel, is low recoil and very pleasant to fire. The 3rd is an Armalite AR-10, which I also like a lot, heavy compared to my 6 lb. AR-15, but recoil is also pleasant, and I like the .30-caliber punch. I think the .308 is a good round.

Nice rifle!! I have a CZ 527 in 7.62x39, really love the set trigger!!

I enjoy loading for and shooting .308s; I have two at the moment. I used to have an AR-10 but the pencil barrel would heat up after just a few rounds and it would start vertical stringing. Even so, I sorta miss it....
