I actually just bought a 24 gauge fowler from Sitting Fox...I'm very happy with it! Mine was one of the ready built fowlers, so there was no delay. I like it so much that I plan to order a .58 caliber Jaeger sometime in the semi-near future.
Ian is one of, it not THE, best firearms expert out there. He does great work putting out free content to folks on the history and engineering behind a wide variety of firearms.
I appreciate all the comments! I have determined the rifle has indeed been rechambered for 7mm Mauser and shoots beautifully. I've found some vintage scope rings that with a little bit of work will work with the existing mounts (for a period-correct zero-holding quick detach). I'll be sure to...
You're right to be suspicious, it certainly chambers but it's not buttery smooth...the 6.5x57 is based on the 7mm Mauser and the cartridges I have are a relatively short bullet...
Thank you for the recommendations! I actually had just ordered some, so we'll see if that works out better...
I recently acquired what I believe to be a Mannlicher Schoenauer but I'm trying to figure out how old it might be and if anyone had any ideas about what scope rings might work with the mounts. Anyone have any guesses? Given that it seems to have some of the hallmarks of an earlier M-S but has...
Thank you to everyone for those suggestions. I've posted to those forums. It appears to be an M3 aircraft barrel and I'll attach an image below for confirmation. Does $350 seem a reasonable price (I've seen some on gunbroker for $500 but that seems far too high)?
I don't have much experience with the M2 machine gun but we recently found an M2 .50 cal machine gun barrel in grandpa's barn (he thought it was a truck axle and was about to scrap it). I'm trying to figure out what might be the best way to go about selling it (I doubt I'll ever be able to...
Agreed. If I were going on safari tomorrow, the 405 Win would lose out to my 375 H&H, but my main point was to demonstrate that lever guns do come in some very serious calibers that have been used to good effect in the past. Certainly, I would have confidence in my 1895 anywhere in North...
And there's a few still in some of the older "Africa" cartridges. I have a Winchester 1895 in 405 Winchester, which is a rifle and cartridge pairing Theodore Roosevelt took with him on safari. It certainly puts a world of hurt on anything on the receiving end.
I have a 1st change hand ejector almost identical to the OP's. I would absolutely NOT recommend firing +P in the revolver. I think the OP will find that the revolver will be very functional with plain old 38 Special. I also have a 4th change and both are scary accurate with 158 gr LRN 38...
Many of the guns in my collection are >100 years old at this point and the overwhelming majority do not have any sort of warranty available. A number of them were built in now non-existent countries, let alone soon to be closed manufacturers. I think you'll well enjoy the H&R purchases and...
Thanks for all the replies, gents. It's a quandry. I may just go ahead and by some live 375 H&H and see how it works out.
Jim, here's a picture of the barrel markings. It's fairly vague but the makers were apparently popular in northern CA in the 50s/60s.
Was 375 Winchester ever referred to as 375 Magnum (the barrel is stamped 375 Magnum)? I'm thinking that a chamber cast will probably be the only way to know for sure.
It seems like the action is set up perfectly for 375 H&H as the snap caps feed perfectly in and out of the camber (excepting...
The bolt face seems to fit the belted mag well and is too large for a .30-06 case. Strangely, the snap caps seem to feed perfectly and will actually extract and eject. The bolt just barely won't close (it seems to rotate about 10-15 degrees instead of the full 90 degree for full closure)...in...
I recently purchased a 1903 sporter rifle that is chambered in some 375 Mag. Initially the rifle was sold as being chambered in 375 H&H Magnum (which was a fair assumption given the rifle's age) but I tried to run some 375 H&H Mag snap caps through the rifle, but had trouble fully closing the...
Thanks for the input, gents. That's about what I was expecting and I'll have to look into the options more thoroughly once the rifle arrives. That's a beautiful stock on your rifle, CaptHank. Where did you acquire it?
