sawed flints i wished i knew not to buy

The German agates seem to be love it or hate it. They can last a long time but I don't think you can knap them so once they're done they're done. Again, I'd say get the English (a dozen) get a couple of French amber just to see if you like them, and then go from there.

sawed flints i wished i knew not to buy

https://www.trackofthewolf.com sells nice flints - get the English ones but if you want to try a couple of French feel free. It's possible somebody will chime in with some awesome local maker who'll sell you some or whatever but if you just want to go buy some flints ToW should make you happy.

Where can I buy real black powder in CA?

You can also apparently call Goex and they can tell you licensed dealers in your area.

Where can I buy real black powder in CA?

It's a little more complicated than that. The wiki seems to be down but over in the transportation code there's something about not having more than 5 pounds in your car, and over in the health and safety code there's some poorly written language about not storing more than 1 pound. It's...

    Cabella's 1860 On-Sale with Extra Cylinder

They seem to make a batch every couple of years. Sometimes they're much easier to find than others.

    Cabella's 1860 On-Sale with Extra Cylinder

I quite like my Pietta Paterson. Anyway, I bought an embarrassing number of cap and ball revolvers around 2013-2014 and I'd say it's generally a wash as to quality. Both companies have variability. The worst gun I got in terms of fit and finish was a Uberti. Uberti has less obvious roll marks.

    777 For a Revolver

I mostly use 777 when I shoot cap and ball revolvers. It works well for that application and if you're using one of the designs that doesn't deal well with fouling it gives you a little extra wiggle room since it doesn't produce quite so much gunk as real black.

    Barrel length vs grains

Basically if you buy a black powder gun once you've shot it a bit and it's broken in a bit and you're used to it, you just adjust the load in 5gr increments, shooting a group at each point, and see what the accuracy does. If you're a target shooter you optimize for accuracy, and then holding...

Found a deal, and soliciting Advice

I'm also hoping that somebody with more experience will chime in, but from my research .45 Colt doesn't expand to seal the chamber as much as you would like (.44-40 would be better in that regard) and you should expect the results to be on the messy side - expect a fair amount of material to...

    Used Uberti Walker,

I use a bit of leather shoelace but I gather some people use rubber bands or o rings similarly. You just slide it on and off so you can still use the lever as necessary.

Capping nipples while cylinder removed from frame?

The consensus is definitely that putting the caps on with the cylinder out has a lot of potential for excitement... and not the good kind. I've done it, because I own a Paterson and that's the only option, but it does require a level of care, that's for sure.

    Traveling with musket

Just to avoid any potential arguments with LEOs or range officials most people use some kind of soft sided case. These are nice - there's a place to put rods and you can put a padlock on it so it can't be unzipped. http://uniquecases.com/product/66-musket-case/

    Black powder guns and lethality/power.

re: bp versus 777 I'm apparently sulphur sensitive or something because at Yellowstone with those sulphur gas places I have trouble not throwing up and likewise if I get a good whiff of black powder smoke I get queasy. There's usually a light wind at the range I use, so it's not a major...

    Thoughts on 1863 Pietta Pocket?

Definitely a fun gun. I have it in brass since I decided I wasn't going to do a conversion and it was much more available and affordable at the time. I do load the cylinder off the gun - that loading lever definitely isn't robust. It hits high at 7 yards, which is as far as I care to shoot...

    Start of expensive career

Make sure you get a .36 and a .31 on your list as well. Those pocket guns have their own appeal as well. Seriously - it's good to have a list of maybe a half dozen cap and ball revolvers you like the looks of, and be aware of what a good price is, and then when Cabelas runs a big Christmas...

    Musket caps

The hazmat is collected by the seller to cover their administrative costs - there's a lot of paperwork involved. Notice the price isn't the same everywhere - Cabelas charges $20 instead of the usual $28.50 most places do. I have no idea why you might get different results with cannon fuse...

As far as I can tell the CCI/Winchester magnum caps are about as hot as current production Remington caps.

Ball Stuck in 1858 Remington Bore

Seriously, get the brass rod. They work and anything else has serious drawbacks. Good thing to have in the range bag anyway.
