I have a question on load development - On my usual range days I get to shoot 300 and 600 yards - each shot is marked individually and theres no real opportunity to shoot and keep a specific target, so measuring group size isn't really very practical. I can use the spotting scope to see where...
I've just fitted a Redding Free Floating Carbide button kit to a .223 full length sizing die and I'm wondering if the button is meant to have the range of movement it has.
These 2 photos show the amount it can move,
The tip piece won't screw on any further so I'm guessing this is...
I always use a very simple piece of camoflague when carrying a rifle to the car - put it in a black plastic garbage bag. If someone sees a garbage bag then the last thing you think is 'gun'.
I think what I'll do is try again with the chrono down at the target 25 yards away. This should hopefully remove some variables like smoke or particles still triggering the sensors ahead of the ball.
Though I think I'll chicken out and shoot from a rest as I'd rather not shoot the poor little...
Its the most modern pistol I can legally own here - simple as that. Its also very very reliable when you get it set right, I've not had any form of cap jam or mis-fire in over 1000 shots.
Just out of interest I chrono'd 6 shots with my Ruger Old Army earlier today - This is the 7.5 inch barrel and 30 grains of H777 by volume using a standard lead .457 ball.
What surprised me was it was averaging 1300 feet per second which is quite a bit higher than I expected.
I taped a...
With the stock nipples on my Ruger Old Army I was getting at least 1 jam or 'rough' action due to jammed cap pieces for every cylinder shot. Thanks to suggestions here I replaced them with the Treso nipples and I've just shot 60 shots without a single cap jam or partial jam.
Money well spent...
Depends
Depends on the gun & nipples.
The Ruger Old Army manual says it can be dry fired with the original factory nipples. But I wouldn't take that as gospel for other makes.
Out of interest I tried chronographing my Ruger Old Army - sadly the smoke cloud always seemed to trigger the chronograph and give false readings.
Other than putting the chronograph down near the target (and increase the chance I turn the chrony into the target :what: ), is there some clever...
Well if I won 100 million and if I took it as a lump sum, then after tax I'd have...100 million - no tax on lottery winnings and its just a lump sum in the UK :)
In 1989 a legal Ruger GP100 cost me around $400 in the UK, but these days 100 million wouldn't be enough to get one legally, so I'd...
One of the 'big' secrets in the UK is how many section 5 firearms certificates there are. These are individually granted by the Home Secretary (i.e. 3rd most senior Politican in the country) and could literally be for anything from a stinger missile to a glock with CCW. I've found nothing to...
What always impresses me about Fairbairn and Sykes is that they didn't just limit themselves to firearms, they were equally skilled in unarmed combat as well. One thing I'll not forget is watching a WW2 Commando training film with these two guys in their 50s/60s throwing fit 20 year old...
After trying a few different types of capper and liberally dropping/mangling a bunch of caps I've finally come up with a favourite for my Ruger Old Army - the Thomson Center U-View capper.
Fired 60 shots earlier today and didn't drop or squash a single cap, and even better I didn't have to...
The Ruger old army manual seems to say that when you've loaded the gun and its still at half cock, that you should always lower the hammer to an empty chamber or safety notch. So you'll then do a full pull back of the hammer back to ensure the gun indexes properly.
I've had people tell me...
I have a powder flask with a nozzle that throws 17.8 grain weight of H777 FFFg.
Sadly the nozzle has no markings so I'm not sure what Blackpowder volume it is (as I have no blackpowder) - I'm guessing its going to be either 20/25/30.
Does anyone know the H777 weight / Blackpowder Volume...
Can anyone recommend a loading stand that can be used with a Ruger Old Army ?
Alternatively does anyone have plans that an all-thumbs wood butcher like myself could use to make one ?
Zero
The general opinion of the Enfield shooters I know in the UK is that the whole wandering zero 'problem' was a deliberate fake.
The story goes that the soldiers involved in the development of the No5 thought that the British Army really needed a semi-auto after the war, so a problem was...
