Federal #1 Buck with FliteControl Released!

I've been really looking forward to this load for some time. I really like this site shot for HD, and it should solve the problem of #1 buck loads having less than spectacular patterns. Let's hope it's as great of a product as the other flite control loads.

    Stevens 200 in 7.62x39

I sold a CZ in 7.62x39 but would consider a Stevens 200. The reason? A Stevens makes a much better "truck/beater" gun that you don't have to worry about babying. The CZ stock and finish are quite nice and I was always worried about beating them up. The CZ shot quite well, but I would far...

Are Hornady XTP's [still] a top performer?

I don't think anyone is arguing that XTPs won't work well or that they should be thrown away (hyperbole much?). Most of the testing using FBI protocols (best that we have at this point) has shown that the Gold Dot, Ranger, and HST rounds perform more reliably through a variety of different...

    remington 700 tactical deer gun?

I've hunted with a Remington 700 LTR in 308 for the past 6 years. It weighs about 10 pounds with scope and ammo. It has a 20" barrel. I had gone through 3 deer rifles in the previous 8 years and this is absolutely the one I'm sticking with. I couldn't recommend it more. It all comes down...

    .223 FMJ Sufficient for Coyotes?

There is a huge difference in wounding ability between softpoints/hollow points and FMJ. Please use expanding ammo. There are some relatively inexpensive options available (Winchester white box 50 round boxes).

would you use a 150 grn 308 bullet for elk?

Bullet selection becomes really important with a 150 grain pill fired out of a .308 intended for elk. Most 150 grain bullets are ok but a few including Barnes' X bullet are great.

    7.62x39's hunting capabilities?

I've shot 5 or so deer with the 7.62x39 using Federal (3 deer) and Winchester (2 deer) soft points. I've got complete penetration on everything except for a steeply angled spike (bullet still penetrated 16"+). Deer do tend to run a bit farther than when hit with the .308, but I'm...

    Questioning my 270win for deer

Please don't lump all polymer tip bullets together. That's lazy thinking. The XP3 bullet behaves VERY differently from a ballistic tip or an SST. That said, I'd use a softer, more aggressively expanding bullet out of a .270 when going after deer (core-loct, SST, power-point, etc.).

Anyone here tried the Federal 7.62 x 39 SP ?

I've observed 4 deer shot with the Federal 123 grain load. 3 of the rounds exited and the 4th penetrated about 12" on a quartering towards shot. The recovered bullet lost about half of its weight but the jacket and core did stay together. The expanded diameter was not overly impressive (maybe...

My deer kills with a .223

From someone who did wet pack testing of .223 with partitions and various loads of .30-30 (5 posts from the top)…. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/3152034/6 The narrow wound channels of the .223 with partition…...

My deer kills with a .223

Regarding .223 vs. .30-30 comparisons - I realize that bullet technology has improved over the past 15 years, but let's not get carried away. The .223 is not in the same league as the .30-30 (at least not inside 150 yards or so). A 150 grain 30-30 Remchester will leave a far larger wound...

    00 Buck Preference

I've got an open choke and use full power (1300 fps) Federal 2 3/4" with the Flite Control wads. Pattern at 25 yards is around 14". It's the only thing that will pattern well for me. You'll have more options with a full choke.

    Hunting deer with an SKS

Federal 125 SP. Remington 125 Sp. Winchester 123 SP. I've shot 1 with the winchester and 3 with the federal. All worked well.

Remington HD (home defense) 12 gauge Shotgun Ammo

I read on another board that they use a part tungsten shot material that is denser than lead. They had some at Cabela's last time I went. Regardless, it is BB shot and cost about $3/round. I can get hevi-shot T size home defense loads for $2/shot or #4 buck for much less than both. I...

Federal Fusion .223 claims vs results

my experiences with fusion bullet I've taken about 15 deer with the fusion bullet - .308, 150 grain. All but one exited. The bullet that didn't had extreme penetration (20+") on a quartering toward shot. Expansion was excellent as was weight retention (90% plus based on an educated...

    Hevi-shot T shot - defense load - 12 gauge

Hevi-shot has come up with a 1 ounce, T shot load with 34 .20 caliber pellets. Cartridge length is 2 3/4. This load is rated at 1000 fps which is below full power. I'd expect this load to be very mild. I'm curious to hear thoughts on this load. While density of pellets is greater than...

    Shoulder shots

When I shoot, I aim for the shoulders and hopefully I’ll catch both of them. If there is any type of angle, I’ll most certainly hit at least one of the shoulders. I was taught to be a lung shooter but no longer believe it is the best shot. I’ve chased down too many deer with good lung hits –...

Handgun for Deer Hunting in Central Texas

I've shot 4 central Texas deer with a 6' S&W 686 topped with a red dot scope. I used full power 357 magnum factory loads (158 gold dot, 158 XTP, and 180 partition gold). It's got plenty of pop for our small deer. Many don't realize how small our deer really are. Our does dress out...
