    shortest shot

By gun used; 22mag - Racoon 5 feet. Shotgun - Turkey 10-11 feet. 243 - Coyote 25-30 yards. 22lr - Squirrel 3 feet. Qualifying close encounters not shot due to wrong season, wrong ammo, wrong gun, non game species etc. Doe 2 feet from me eating leaves, clueless to my presence - way...

    Remington 1100 from gunbroker

Makes you want to kick your own arse for missing out on that deal.

Winchester 1300, bad deal or good deal

Sounds like a decent deal. I have a 1300 blackshadow. Good dependable shotgun. Breeze to clean up. The 'speed-pump' action was a thing to get used to. Easy to find chokes for.

    Coyote Cartridge?

I've only shot a handfull of coyotes with the .243 but those I have were hammered down. No death spins yet. A few tail shakes. Now I've also let a few walk because I didn't have the shot I wanted. All Im realy saying is hey, what ever combo you use that works stick to it. Just make a good...

    Taste of goose?

Interesting recipie ideas. Almost enough to spark a renewed interest in Geese hunting. Tried it many years ago, didn't work out so well. I mean the hunting part was fine but the cooking; Tried to grill it, it was just bad. Might as well been a rubber chicken. And to top it off it locked...

    243 Kick

There will be a difference between a varmint(heavy) and a sporter(light) for the recoil, but you can also find a difference with the .243 ammo you choose. My VLS has a 1.9&1/8 twist, realy likes 70-95 grain jazz. Now I aslo reload but I belive you can get factory managed recoil ammo to...

    hunting boar with knife *video*

Some of these so called 'hunting videos' are doing much more harm then good. Everybody with a damn camcorder thinks all of a sudden they can be a producer or some jazz. Ok so in many places these hogs are varmints, that doesn't mean it's death needs to be a cheap movie.

Range Report - Maverick 88 Field "all purpose" model

Nice to see the Mav88 still kickin. The newer models look a tad better then mine, but then again it's more then 15 years old and seen some time in the woods I can tell you. I've taken decent care of it - I mean there isn't alot to them when you get down to it. She is showing her age, but I...

    Mossberg choke wrench

I'll keep the nickel idea in mind! Although anything choke-wise designed for the 500 should work on the 88. I also use winchokes.

    The .22 rifle

I do like my 22mag. It has been dependable, productive, and also very instrumental in teaching my kids how to shoot. Had a 60 at one time and sold it. Wish I hadn't now but haven't decided on a replacement for it.

If you had $300 to spend........

Tough call between a Marlin 30/30 or 35 and a Mossberg ATR in .270 or '06. Hold the phone I just remembered a nice in-line I wanted ...

    Whats new this new year?

There is some chatter about the new Marlin .308 special. Limited info on their press release but it is not a standard .308 oviously.

What is your dream hunting trip?

Been working on a Bear hunt with my son, brother & brother in-law. We almost went this year but lack of vacation time & some flooding problems nixed those plans. I want to go pronghorn hunting someday, might not sound like the ultimate thing to do but to me it's a goal.

243 win for varmit and deer??

tbredw725; Sounds like a fine rifle. I would go through it and clean the bore. Ruger lists the MII .243 with a 1:9 twist. Most .243's seem to shine in the 70-90 grain range. My vls has a 1:9&1/8 twish and shoots 70 blitzkings & 95 gr partitions orgasmicly. I also have a 85 gr gameking &...

Is it just me, or does anyone else check how available chokes are for what ever shotgun your thinking of before buying?

    Consensus of Maverick 88 quality

A no frills slug gun, turned Turkey gun with a barrel off a 500. I have owned one for about 15 years now. Since then have a dedicated bird gun, but I still use the smoothbore for deer. Ugmo (m88) is showing it's age and has the classic mossberg front end rattle. But it also refuses to die...

    .243

Larger then necessary for varmints? Perhaps, but dead is dead and the .243 has authority when it comes to predators & varmints. Plus alot of variety 55-115 grain (55-100 factory). Imo if you are hunting for pelts I might agree with you. However I flat out disagree with it not being flat...
