I also hike with a Safepacker. Its far more than a nylon bag - it holds your gun and reload perfectly, has a much faster draw, and is very well made in the USA. I also have the Wilderness belt and one of their Safari bags - great stuff.

The 642 in all-steel is the 640. And it is far more comfortable (for me) to shoot.

My initial response was, "well obviously the 686"... BUT, I prefer to carry a revolver, and my 640-1 is with me all the time. I can always keep the .45 around the house. So I'll go with the steel J-frame 640-1, .357 magnum.

1) Yes, absolutely. I CCW an all steel J-frame IWB every day. Even with shorts and a t-shirt it doesn't print. I recommend the Pachmayr Compac-Pro grips. 2) A 4" is too long for CCW if you plan to sit down, I think. I have a 2.5" L frame that works well for OWB, but its too thick for me...
