00 Buck SD/HD Ammo Help

Lee,

I live in a very suburban area. Kind of like those communities where the houses all look a like, except here the houses don't look alike. Nonetheless, there are lots of houses around and its quite urban. No large land areas around here and I wouldn't likely be engaging any BG's outdoors, and if so, at very short distances. Should I look into some #4? I'd enjoy the reduced recoil as well.

Also let me remind you that my HD Shotgun is a naked Saiga 12.

Just be sure any reduced recoil loads you try will run the gun reliably. Other than that, #4 buck should work for you.

Co,

I've never seen any 0000 buckshot in about 40 years of shotgunning, but there's still some 000 buck around if you look for it. Personally I see no real advantage in 000 over 00 at usual buckshot ranges, but to each his own...

Sorry Lee, I meant TriBall, not "triple shot".

AFAIK, nobody makes the 0000 anymore, but I think TriBall is out there. For HD, these monsters are superfluous.

Oh, no I wasn't looking for reduced recoil loads. I was just saying that if it's as effective, I would prefer shooting #4 because of the reduced recoil vs. 00. I am assuming #4 does in fact recoil less?

#4 buck recoils slightly harder, since it throws more lead at the same velocity.

I keep 5 rounds of TAP 00 buck next to my M500 and occasionally practice using Winchester #4 buck. My thinking is I've got some of the best rounds for true HD so I'll use the cheap stuff for practice. This isn't sub MOA training. This is getting the feel to load and fire automatically without thinking or even seeing the gun, rounds or targets.

In case anyone is wondering why, I have two small kids in the home so I never keep anything loaded.

You can read for hours on 00 -vs- #4 buck and not come away any closer to choosing which is better. I think that debate is pretty evenly split mainly because you never know what shooting conditions you will encounter.

Don't take this as gospel just what basic conclusion I came away with after an evening of readin on the subject a while back... At self defense ranges if you may have to shoot through a barrier 00 is a better choice, no barrier risks and #4 seems to have an advantage (even this is arguable). Shooting through barriers though, 00 wins.

On my SLP I keep #4 in the pipe followed by #4, 00, 00, Brenneke KO slug. (If there are 5 of them I feel sorry for the last guy)

Wife's 870 has all managed recoil 00.

A roll crimp is not necessarily an indication of an inferior shell. It is more costly to manufacture than a star crimp. Roll crimps are generally used on reduced powder loads to assist the powder burn to create adequate combustion pressure during the early stages by not allowing a premature movement. As pressure builds, release occurs at a predictable moment, minimizing pressure variables. (hows that for big words)

I use them for this reason with sub-sonic loads, using #4 and #00 buckshot.

I own a Mossy 590 for HD. I have patterened it with 3 types of 00 Buck. All Low Recoil, all shot at 10 yds, Remington, Fiocchi & Federal.

Remington RL12BK00 - 3.5 inch pattern
Fiocchi 12LE00BK - 5.5 inch pattern
Federal LE133 00 - 1.2 inch pattern (Flite Control)
I also took some Estate 7.5 Birdshot with me. The pattern was bigger than the target.

I consider any of the 00 Buck acceptable.

I'm no expert, but IMHO, unles you are literally face to face with the Bad Guy, birdshot will only make him/her mad.

My 2¢.

How about the Military grade 00 dark green stuff. It was all I could find at the place I bought my shotgun recently. It was $4.69 a box of 5 so I assume they are at least decent.
