Today I went to the Manatee Gun Club in Manatee, Florida. For anyone in the area I recommend this range very much.

After much debate on whether or not to take the newest girlfriend out to the range or not, I decided to give it a go. I am sorry I did, however. Not only did she enjoy it so much she wants to go back soon, she also out shot me with my Nylon 66 .22lr rifle!

She seemed more focuses and more intuned with her accuracy. I began to humor her by telling her how well she was shooting until it sank in: I was being outdone by a first timer!

She even went as far as saying how she wants her own gun. Have I created a monster? :)

In other news, today was my first time shooting at 565 yards. I have to say it was quite an experience with 7.62x51. I never knew how far 500+ yards was until I saw it in person. All in all it was beautiful weather (a little windy), and a fine day for shooting!

Well done!

It's never a bad thing to bring another shooter into the fold.

Unless, of course, you have a sensitive bank account.

The Manatee Club is nice, though it's very far out into the boonies. I prefer to goto a local indoor pistol range, though I like to top in there once a month for some outdoor shooting.

That's the best range in central Florida.:) And it will not be in the boonies much longer. Every time I go there the housing development gets closer.:uhoh:
It is a 110 mile round trip for me and when I go I tend to bring too many guns and ammo.

My next firearm purchase isn't going to be an AR that I'd like to plink with. Nor will it be a 375 H&H to get a taste of the big bore experience with. Nor will it be a 45/70 to use as a black powder cartridge platform. No, my next firearm purchase is most likely going to be a 2nd 22 LR because my wife has decided that my 10/22 is really HER 10/22.

I'm glad you had a good time at the range with your girlfriend. As for being outshot, welcome to Murphy's law of shooting - the other shooter will always shoot better with your guns than you do, especially if it is a significant other doing the shooting.

A new Marlin Mod. 60 would make a super May Day present. They come in some kind of fancy new stock material now. I bet she'd love it. ;)

We always have been better shooters than men. I don't know why though.

1. No ego invested in knowing how to do such a "manly" thing.

2. A brain better suited to multitasking. Look at all the stuff that has to happen correctly and in the proper order for a bullet to go where you want it to - sights, target, trigger control, breathing - I'm suprised it takes as little practice as it does for a man to be able to shoot as well as a woman.

The only time I think men are consistently better shooters than women is when speed is involved.

Yeah, too bad I can't legally purchase a gun for her in the state of Florida (or any state for that matter I think). I guess she will just have to steal mine. :uhoh:

We always have been better shooters than men. I don't know why though.

In my experience teaching, I've seen this and believe it is driven by three things (some of which is noted above)

  1. No ego involved (I'm a man, I must be able to know how to shoot)
  2. Hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills are generally more refined in women (men can kill and butcher the mastadon, women create thread from the sinew and intricate clothing - no stereotyping intended of course)
  3. Men seem very focused on lots of noise, blast and carnage versus actually hitting something

My experience has been that women have watched fewer Rambo movies as teenagers and actually listen to instructions better with fewer preconceptions as to how to shoot.

My wife likes to shoot (needs lots of practice), but with two little ones we rarely get the chance to shoot together. I think mostly she likes it because I do, and I will put on my best smile and patiently attend the occasional quilt show with her.

Life is good.

You can't buy it and bring it to her, but could you buy her a gift certificate for the total amount and go with her to pick one out?

Why not? Is she not a resident of Florida? Does she have a criminal record?
There is nothing wrong with buying someone a gun as a gift, even Sarah Brady has done it. It is only an illegal straw purchase if it is intended for someone who cannot legally buy their own.

Not quite of age to purchase her own yet. Close but not quite there.

I did not know that. I assumed only direct family (Father to Son, Husband to Wife) could give a gun as a gift. It must be for those who aren't old enough. Thanks for the info.

Tonight she asked excitedly when I was going to take her again. :D

That's not fair, seeing as you have no idea how old I am.

We demand pictures so we can judge for ourselves. :)

I got to get out of Bradenton, the field is rather slim for women under 60. :barf:
