1" group....Mini-14.....100 yds....open sights !!!

Took out the mini today. Put 45 rounds downrange. Maybe I will need a full choke. Hot gun. No wind.

How many 1" groups can YOU count, kids?
Like a "Where's Waldo?"

my 50 BMG is so accurate, it shoots exactly 1/2 MOA 1-shot groups at 100 yrds, EVERY TIME, measured edge-to-edge, not center-hole to center-hole!


really, the consistency is so alarming, it's no wonder cali wants to ban them

I'm going to check out one of those Savage "Accutrigger" .223's.

I have so much surplus ammo that it will last a lifetime. I'd like SOME of it to be really accurate. But the Mini's fun.

I have seen guys who close one eye to sight a rifle, but you have to understand that you need to close the eye that isn't looking through the sights.

My AK is about the same way though, but not quite as bad. Still looks like a fun gun though.

Cut the barrel down to 16". This will give you 2-3 MOA and NO POI drift as the gun heats up. It will cost about $75 from a gunsmith.

Just out of curiosity, is your Mini completely out-of-the-box stock?? I can get 4" groups at 100yds with mine off a rest using the factory rear sight after a having made a few inexpensive mods.

I added a small gas port bushing (Got it from Mike Knifong in Beaverton OR along with his trigger job) and John Masen muzzle brake and a recoil buffer. I use primarily UMC 55gr FMJ ammo or Winchester 55 gr. I have yet to bed the action as I'm debating about a Hogue stock.

Other tricks are the mentioned cutting of the barrel to about 16.5" and a barrel stabilizer. Don't cut the barrel too close to 16" as I have heard different stories about where the measurements are taken and you don't want to go below 16"!!

If I hold shooting to about 5-6 rounds per minute, the groups will stay pretty close. I get an occasional flye,r but I can live with that if the groups stay consistent overall.

Your 1-inch groups look startlingly like those on my 2 Mini-14s used to look - which is why I no longer have them, and have a Bushie AR instead. I had a stainless one with just plain old iron sights, and then a blued Ranch that I put a 3x-9x Leupold on top of...and they both sucked, using either factory ammo or reloads using match bullets (though the latter sucked less - I got down to about 2 1/2" groups). I ditched the last one for my AR upper (20" heavy barrel, to complement my match triggered lower), and I am shooting about 2 MOA with factory ammo and 1 MOA with reloads (so far-newer and hopefully better loads are coming to the range with me on Thanksgiving, to be followed with a great dinner).

Ditch the Mini if you're tired of those groups, and get yourself an AR.

It's been said over and over again, but....
Spend $40 (muzzle brake and bedding kit), and you'll see those groups shrink considerably.
I was also pleased with the results when I took the rear sight off and ran a bigger drill bit through it. I then dabbed it with some cold blue, and reinstalled.
The sight picture is a lot sharper now.

For a person that can't own an AR, a Mini 14 is not a bad option. I would consider getting a trigger job, having the barrel cut to 16", and putting in a small gas port.

You'll have a rugged, reliable, handy carbine, that will still be legal where you live.
Get some Masen 10rd mags from Midway for $10 apiece, and install Ruger bottoms and followers.

You could even use a Magcinch to strap two mags together, or get one of those buttstock mag pouches.
20rds of quick 5.56 ammo could ruin somebody's day.

Has any Mini-14 experts that keep saying "cut down the barrel, and make the gas port smaller" actually done these two things? My experance with gas operated autoloading weapons is that when you cut down the barrel, the gas port usually needs to be OPENED to work dependably.
