1 MOA or less .308 bolt action under $1k?

Pretty much every modern .308 in good working order should be able to do that. Now its up to you if you will be able to shoot 5 inches at 500 yards. Your request of 8 lbs is going to be the key. As most varmint weight rifles tip the scales over 9 lbs without optics or mounts. My rig is 13 lbs and I carry it into field but I am use to it. If you want accurate affordable .308 then get a savage. I have a bottom of the barrel short action .223 purchased at walmart that is a .5 moa rifle and it even shoots m193 ball under a inch. I would assume same would be true for that exact rifle in .308 would do the same

Just got back from the range. My stainless Ruger 308 just put 3 shots into a 1 1/8" group at 200 yards. My best 100 yard group was 7/16". These were my best groups, but most 100 yard groups are under 1" and it is almost always under 1 1/2" at 200. Cost me $450, and weighs 8lbs scoped.

My Kimber shot only slightly worse, 1 5/8" at 200 and 1" at 100.

I have had good luck with Tikka's as well for well under $1000.

700 VTR - very light, good balance, sub-moa accuracy (don't know about to 500yds)

mine shoots better with 175gr march ammo than the 168gr.

I've kind of had my eye on a Marlin XS7

I've not heard that the Marlin rifles are 1moa or less. Most of the range reports I've seen put them in the 1.5" 3 shot group category. Still better than most can shoot standing but that performance would be dismal from a bench.

+1 for Savage rifles.

The accuracy isn't much of an issue anymore. I doubt you could buy ANY name-brand rifle these days that won't do MOA with match grade out of the box anymore. The market is so competitive, no one dares release the 'least accurate bolt rifle on the market'.

The H&R Handi Rifle Survivor models are reported to be very accurate and respond to tweaking if you can get by with just one shot at a time. It goes for less than $300 with that 22" bull barrel in .308 and the synthetic stock with removable fore end and weighs about 7 pounds. You could put that much again into a scope (it comes with the mounting base), add a lightweight bipod and 100 rounds of quality ammo and still get change back from your $1000. If you take some time to tweak it, bed and float the stock, find the ammo it likes, I bet it will outshoot most rifles costing twice as much or more. Just another option for you. Cheers, Matthew

i shoot my remington pss 26in bb with a hs stock (almost $1000 wth tax) out to 1k with 175 matchkings, millet 6-25 X 56 scope ($350 maybe) but its a 30mm tube so it has a lot of adjustments. if your not into using target turrets try that burris signature with the ballistics plex. that will take you to 500. before i had a chance to load any bullets for my rig i shot a box of 168 FGMM through it and best 3 shot group on a set of digital calipers was just shy of .03 of and inch. might be a little heavy for you but good rig.

i also have the sps tactical with the 20 in bull barrel which i do recommend over the VTR or the Varmint. been around all of them but the tactical is the best shoot by my standards. and its only around $600 or so.

Remington 700 SPS tactical with the 20" barrel and Hogue overmold is 1MOA for about $600. Makes a good light accurate rifle.

Yeah, nice looking rifle with guarantee, but quite a ways over the budget - welcome to THR, Z963.

I think the best bet (closest to the ideal) is gonna be one of these:

Never thought I would say this but I think a Savage , as Tad recommends, with an accustock would be one of the surest bets to meet all requirements. It -unlike Tikka or Weatherby, are made in the USA - and I am betting it will shoot at least as well.

The Ruger M77 Hawkeye would be a good choice. The All Weather looks sweet. You can probably pick one up for about $650.
