I am looking to replace the barrel on a 10/22 the my granddaughter uses for steel challenge. she wants a carbon fiber to lighten it up some ( mostly because she thinks they look cool). all the ones I see have a Bentz chamber. I am worried that they may not chamber the bulk ammo we usually use.

Some "Bentz" chamber barrels are slightly generous to work with bulk ammo and I am sure other members will chime in to point out which brands/weights of ammunition worked with their barrels.

Because I am retired and don't compete, when I was looking for bull barrel replacement for 10/22 and T/CR22 to conduct my 50/100 yard "real world" comparison tests of commercially available bulk ammo (Not match ammo like SK/Eley/Wolf), I chose to go with KSA bull barrel as they have same dimensions as factory Ruger "Target" chamber that come with Target barrels (More generous than Bentz chamber according to Rimfire Central threads) to work with bulk 22LR ammunition - https://www.keystonesportingarmsllc.com/revolution-stocks/revolution-1022-barrels/

So far, KSA bull barrel has worked with all the 30+ brands/weights/lots of bulk ammunition I have tested listed on this thread - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...t-shipped-pricing.902560/page-5#post-12304852

Here are specs for the KSA bull barrel - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...izing-22lr-on-the-cheap.898035/#post-12124035
  • 920 Target Barrel
  • 12 Lands 12 Grooves
  • Groove Depth: .004"
  • 1:16 RH Rifling Twist
  • 1/2″ – 28 Threaded w/Cap
  • Precision Target Chamber

BTW, some 10/22 barrels can shoot pretty accurately. My standard taper barrel with over 6500 rounds still produces around 1/2" groups with CCI SV/Blazer 40 gr and around 3/4" groups with Aguila/Norma Tac-22 40 gr with some accurizing work done at 50 yards - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...22lr-on-the-cheap.898035/page-2#post-12304052

Here's KSA chamber/rifling

And 10/22 still producing around 1.25" - 1.5" groups at 100 yards with Aguila 40 gr - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...22lr-on-the-cheap.898035/page-2#post-12194385

there really is nothing wrong with the barrel she has. She just wants a new lighter barrel. and a carbon fiber would match the chassis she won last year at the wi state rimfire challenge.

I have a couple with Green Mountain barrels which I believe uses the Bentz chamber. I have neve found any ammo they won't chamber. Extracting a dud usually requires flipping it out with a small pocket knife that I keep in my range box just for that purpose.

I've got three aftermarket barrels, by Kidd, Shaw and Green Mountain. The GM bull barrel on my target rifle definitely has the tightest chamber, and I agree with doubleh that problems are more to do with extraction of dud rounds than feeding and chambering from the magazine (FWIW, I keep a multi-sectioned cleaning rod in my shooting bag for clearing stuck brass.)

As autoloaders go, 10/22s seem fairly ammo tolerant, but I wouldn't want to try predicting your results with one particular barrel and ammo combination -- I think variables in manufacturing tolerances make this a case of you pays your dues and takes your chances.

Yep. I've posted this picture before:

Yet my own 10-22 does great with Winchester "Power-Points" (my favorite ground squirrel ammo), while "Power-Points" won't even fit in my wife's tight-chambered Ruger "Bearcat" revolver.
My 10-22 does okay with Winchester "Wildcat-22" and Federal "Classic" ammo too. And both of those are cheaper than that Federal Premium "Hunter Match" in the picture - at least they used to be. Luckily, I haven't had to shop for .22 rimfire ammo in a couple of years. :)
