I've just built up a 10-22, barrel, stock, trigger group, extractor, nice scope, you know the works, and will sight it in this weekend. Could someone tell me why people recommend squaring the bolt face to a .0425 rim depth and also pinning the firing pin so it cannot raise up? How do these mods increase accuracy from stock setup, and if they do how much and why? Would it be worth it? I've already spent some bucks on this thing and might as well do all I can while I'm at it. Thanks

One benefit often mentioned is that the hand cycled first round fired is supposed to be in the group with the rest of the shots.

I haven't had this done to any of my guns yet, though I mean to give it a try. My squirrel gun, which has a Volquartsen carbon fiber barrel, will shoot .3-.4" groups at 50 yards with several different brands of ammo. Sadly, it puts the first shot about 1/2" high and usually right. My hunting routine is to load up and then fire a shot into the ground. I know that the next one will go where it's supposed to.

IIRC pinning the firing pin is to give more consistent primer ignition. Facing the bolt sets the headspace and squares the bolt face once again helps in the consistancy from shot to shot.

I had my bolt done several years ago. I think it was done by Power Custom. They also jeweled the bolt. IIRC the total cost was something like $45.

I have no idea if it had any effect on my accuracy as I made a lot of changes at the same time. The best thing to do is go to http://www.rimfirecentral.com/ and ask those folks what they think.
