I've had this rifle for at least 15 years, but have never shot it much. Maybe 200 rounds when I bought way back when, but then nothing since. Just more of a hand gun guy, but it was a good deal and I'm a gun slut so it followed me home.

It's been a safe queen forever, but now the wife wants to shoot rifles. Since she's never shot much before it was with mixed feelings that I brought it out. On the one hand it's perfect for teaching a newbie to shoot, on the other hand having it denied me the chance to go shopping :cuss:

Anyway, we get the range, and I teach her about it, and watch her as she starts in with it. Once she's comfortable, and I'm sure she's not going to shoot anything she shouldn't. I go to sending my wood seeking bullets down range. Anyway, about 50 rounds in she begins to have trouble with the stock Ruger magazine. It hangs up with rounds not advancing, and not feeding. I'm having to get my pocket knife and/or screw driver after it at least once a mag. I had the same problems so I don't think it was a shooter issue.

I don't have any spare mags, but you can bet I'll be buying some this Sunday at the gun show. Meantime what could be causing this? Is there a way to clean or service these mags?

Thanks
Dan

Ruger rotary magazines become unreliable as they become fouled with soot and powder residue.

Butler Creek 10 rd magazines have performed reliably for me. No cleaning necessary.

I have a few Tactical Innovations TI25 polycarbonate 25 rd magazines that don't perform reliably when fully loaded.

Good luck.

Sad thing is I had to look up how to clean it. It's clean now, and seems to be better on the bench, but of course we won't know until we get to the range again.

Only odd thing was the magazine rotor on had what may be a chip on the largest carrier. Can't be sure, because I don't have another to confirm with, and it's an awfully smooth break if it's a break. I'll check it out for sure once I have acquired a new one to compare it with.

Either way, thanks for taking the time to respond.

Before you buy at the gun show, CDNN has the clear plastic rotary magazines on sale. The clear ones take the guesswork out of round count and cleanliness.

I think they're the best mags; but if you put 26 in instead of 25....

Had some issues with my TI25's this week as well. Functioned flawless when purchased now i get fte every now and then. I do have a Shooters Ridge 25rd thats has not failed even once in over 3000 rounds. The TI25's are easy to clean I'm sure thats half the prob. Great mag overall.

They work best for me when I load them with 20 rds. After 20 rounds or so the magazine spring is nearly overloaded . I prefer the Butler Creek.

I have the Butler Creek Hot Lips Magazine loader, which also works with my Butler Creek Steel Lips and Tactical Innovations magazines. Just dump in a box of .22 and turn a knob to load the magazines. Quick & easy.

I've found that Remington ammo gums up 10/22 factory magazines like nothing else. I can run them for years and thousands of rounds of Federal or CCI with no problems, but a couple of boxes of Golden bullets and they have to be cleaned.
