I am thinking about picking up a 10/22 and am looking for a little info from you guys. Here are my questions.

Scope recommendations

Reasonable mods to the gun, such as trigger work or a new barrel

What should they go for in California north of San Francisco. The local hardware store (don't laugh, the next closest gun dealer is about 90 minutes away) sells them for about 239, the same at Big 5(also about 90 minutes away).

I don't know what they go for in CA but I picked a used one in excellent condition at a KY gunshow for $125. I haven't done any internal mods to it for the fact that I just didn't want to sink alot of money into it. I pust a simmons 56mm red dot scope on it that I picked up from natchez shooter's supply for $33. I really like the red dot scope for plinking. It was my first red dot and I wasn't sure how I would like it, but it has been suprisingly fun. I picked up some eagle 30 rd. mags that work pretty well. Stay away from ramline, they are garbage. It's just a neat little rifle that is fun as hell to shoot for just a little money. Also, the ammo that I found works best, at least w/ aftermarket mags, is federal champion. It can be found cheap at walmart and seems to function much better than remington thunderbolts or winchester wildcats. I picked up a barrel on ebay for $18. It was just a stock barrel but you can find a good deal on any type of barrel you want.

There is no end to the amount of money you can put into a 12/22. I think the best bang for my buck was a Butler Creek Stock Barrel combo. I think it was about $150 or so and had a full size stock and a .902 barrel with a target chamber. It's now a real tack driver. I also put a Burris 2 X 7 scope on it.

I have a Nikon 4x32mm ProStaff scope on my 10/22. It has good adjustments, excellent optics and 4x is a good match to .22 ranges. MSRP for the Nikon is about $110 - $120, tho I got mine as a factory refurb from Natchez for $69. :)

The only internal modification is a Power Customer hammer, which gave me a very nice trigger pull of around 2 lbs., as opposed to the execreble factory trigger.

Amen to that! You can go crazy if you want. Just take a look at www.rimfirecentral.com and see what kind of ultimate 10/22 rifles folks have.

I'd say that the only realy parts you need are...
1) extended magazine release
2) extended bolt handle.

The auto bolt release is nice too but isn't really a "must have" part.

Check out Connecticut Precision Chambering (http://www.ct-precision.com). Their trigger work is top-notch and they offer other 10/22 services too.

$239 sounds like a awful lot for a plain old 10/22. Ive got 2, the first one I bought new for $130 or so, I cant remember exactly, the second one I bought used 2 years later for $130. Both were blued not stainless.

I put a BSA red dot (around $30) on the first one and bought some Hot lips 25 rd mags, which are garbage. The second one I put the Butler Creek stock/barrel combo on, a Simmons 3x9x40 scope, and imitation harris bipod legs.

DITTO on this mod, i loved my 10/22 after putting in the PC hammer!

for a scope, it'll depend on what you want to do with the gun. for long shots, i recommend a 6 X 40mm simmons or bushnell.

for up-close, fast moving stuff like rabbits, i recommend a larger diameter red dot 1X site to be able to acquire a bead on a target quickly and keep it on while its moving fast. if you mount a scope on it, be sure you put on a WEAVER RAIL to prevent the scope from moving from recoil after time.

Get a Volquartsen Bolt buffer, it will save wear-n-tear on your bolt and the receiver, and take the "clickety-clack" out of shooting it, quiet it down some.

I recommend Butler Creek STEEL LIPS 25 round mags if you want to go hi-cap.

if you want to make it a collapsable, leave on the factory barrel and get a Butler creek folding stock for it.

for good cheap ammo, try Winchester Dynapoints from Wally World, 40 grn semi HP's, usually $10 for 500 or 550 rounds. or you can try CCI Blazer. At the very least you can try Federal bulk. STAY AWAY FROM REMINGTON !!!!

good luck, and let us know how it went! -Eric

I'll second the rimfirecentral.com recommendation.

Changing out the hammer is almost a necessity; I have a Volquartsen in mine. Well worth the $30. I like the modified bolt release and an extended mag release too. The important thing is to have fun!

If you shop around, you can usually find 25rd single-stack mags, almost the same as the butler creek steel-lips, but an off-brand. They work good, but are older, so I don't keep them full.
