I was just about to post in here looking for a recommendation on a .17HMR rifle. I've been eyeballing the Savage 93R17-FVSS bolt action. However, I was thinking maybe I'd like to take a 10/22 magnum and convert it to .17 HMR. Then just last night flipping through the gun magazines at Barnes and Noble, I saw an advertisement for the new Ruger 10/17. So new, it's not on their web page. SMRP of $510...seems pricey.

Any other recommendations? 10/22 is good for plinking, don't really need a .17 HMR for plinking. That would be more for target shooting and occasional pest control. Any recommendations? The Savage seems like a decent deal but I hope at least 10 shot magazines are available.

If you can get them, my FFL's Davidson's account lists the 10/17 at a little under $380. The Remington 597 .17HMR is listed at $310 for the synthetic stock, $370 for the laminate.

If you want a lever action, the Ruger 96/17 is $287, and the Henry Varmint Express is $372, and the Winchester 9417 is $425-470.

Taurus pump actions can be had for as little as $260.

The Savage is supposed to be a pretty accurate rifle and is a lot less than a Ruger 10/17. I picked up a Marlin 917V at the local Wally World earlier this year and paid all of $167. I added a Bushnell 4-12x40 AO scope on Burris high signature Zee rings. The Marlin mag is a 7-rounder and is the same one as the 22mag rifle. The factory stock is not the prettiest in the world but from what I have heard, Richards Microfit Gunstocks makes some really nice laminated stocks for the Mrlin .22mag that also works on the .17. Marlin also has laminated stocks for around $80 on their website.

I only have about 100 rounds thru it so far but the groups are right around 1" at 100 yards using CCI TNT ammo. I just picked up some Hornaday v-max stuff and I'll be tryin that at the next range trip.

I would have really liked a 10/17 but the accuracy of it was about the same as either the Savage or Marlin and the price was almost a couple hundred more that the others. So I figured the cost savings would get the scope and mounts and a bunch of ammo. Now if the cost of .17HMR ammo would just drop to about the price of .22mag.... :D

Yeah, but the 10/17 and Rem 597 are autoloaders. If you want one, of course you'll pay more than a Savage bolt action. Not to put down the Savage, as I have no doubt its accuracy reputation is well deserved, but it's not an autoloader. It seems that is a preferable option to our original poster.

I just about built a 10/17. But ended up getting a better deal on a .22 mag barrel. Hopefully I'll wrap up the bolt/slide this weekend. Gotta wait until next tuesday for the charging handle tho :(

A buddy of mine picked up the Savage. It's a fun little gun, I couldn't get used to the magazine release though.

For under $200 you can have a Savage Bolt action rifle.

I have one and it will shoot dimes at fifty yards and quarters all day long at 100 yards.

You are right in that .17 is not a plinking round. Get a .22 if you want to plink.

But if you want to shoot better than you are, get a Savage.
