I've been shooting a restored Baker 10 gauge double. After a long and fruitless search, the only hulls I could get were new Cheddite. They came primed. After firing them the first time, I'm reloading them with Winchester 209 primers. I can push the primers in with my thumb to full depth most of the time. I don't know if they will stay seated when the powder (black) and other components are compressed. And I suspect the pockets will only get larger, not smaller.

I've had this problem with RIO 12 gauge hulls. But I felt no loss in just tossing the RIO hulls. The 10 gauge Cheddite hulls came at a steep price and I can't afford to toss them.

Is there a cheap work around? Other than buy Cheddite primers or a primer pocket reconditioner?

Why would you not use RIO 209s or Cheddite primers? The European primers are slightly bigger. I would not use anything which can be finger primed. . . Bonus is you can find them for same price or even less as American 209s.

Your best bet is to ask at ShotgunWorld.com...

Not saying someone here won't know the answer, just that your odds are better over there IMNSHO...

Because I already have an ample supply of Winchester 209 primers. I've accumulated all kinds of this and that over the years that I'm covered up by odds and ends. If I pick up the project again in a year or two, I'll not likely find the small quantity of "odd" primers but I'll likely have good control of my large inventory of Winchester primers that I use far more often.

I'm aware the European primers are generally lower cost than domestic. But I bought the Winchester primers in volume (and they're paid for). A 100 package or two of European primers my not have a price advantage and I'd have to go buy them.

All said, I'll probably have to bite the bullet and buy Cheddite primers.

I've looked at pictures of the BPI primer pocket pocket conditoner and it looks like a facsimile could be scrounged up.

I really underestimated the additional expense and trouble to gather components to load 10 gauge.

But the Win 209s are NOT metric, which the Cheddites, Nobels, Fiocchis, and RIOs are, so the Win may not stay tight - if you can seat them flush with your thumb, the primer pocket is too large for the Win 209s. Save the Win for other ammo and find a box of Euro ones

I've used Winchester 209 to load Fiocchi hulls. The Fiocchi shells came from the factory in Ozark Missouri. That may have made a difference.

I did a lot of Googling and reading before I bought the Cheddite hulls as to the primer compatability. I couldn't get a clear answer. Guys with reloading machines that resize the base may be able to use any primer and not notice any difference.

If I were you, then I would spend $30 for 1000 RIO primers and move on. I might even be able to trade my 209s for someones Cheddite or RIO primers, but that is just me. What I would not do is try to put undersized primers in my hulls and risk scaring my newly rebuilt uber cool 10 gauge. but, ymmv

google tells me, Cheddite hulls = RIO or Cheddite primers and American hulls will take Cheddite or RIO primers however once used can never go back to 209s.

The resizing function on shotshell reloaders pertains to the diameter of the brass base, not the primer pocket within.

Oneounce knows a couple of things about shot shell reloading, I respect his advice.

I figured out a pretty easy way to get what I wanted. I took a 3/4" bolt and dropped it in the hull, then set the hull on firm, hard surface and gave it a good bump with hammer. The first test was a little over done. It reduced the primer pocket diameter by .010. With practice, the rest tightened up nicely.
