I would use which ever JHP functions best in your gun. Its a 10mm, any JHP should be a man stopper!

Yep, you need to find a load that works in your gun. However, most factory 10mm ammo is pretty watered down. I recommend looking at Underwood Ammo, Doubletap Ammo, and Sig Sauer has a decent offering. I've heard mixed results on the V Crown Bullet though.

For human threats you don't need the hot loads. Even the watered down stuff exceeds 40 S&W performance and 40 ain't bad. I buy a lot of ammo from these guys.

I use their 180 gr FMJ loads for the range, their 155 gr HP @ 1375 for the rare times I actually carry my G20 or G29 when not in the woods. When in bear country I use Double Tap 200 gr hardcast @ 1300 fps.

I use a 180 Gold dot loaded to about 1250 FPS. Underwood makes good stuff too if you want full power and dont load them yourself. I have used their 180 and 200 XTP loadings as well as their 180 Gold dot loadings. All shot well and met the advertised velocity.

To get the most out of the 10mm you need to handload. For 2 legged varmints I like what I would consider a "medium" loading at about 1200 or so FPS. It is plenty controllable from a G20 for me Easy enough with 800x or similar powders.

What pistol are you using?

Despite partial jacket separation, this thing penetrates 17¾" through 4 x denim, with .50 " expansion of the core...

Very awesome.

I use Underwood's 200gr XTP 10mm rounds in the 1911 I carry.

Hornady indicates their XTP bullet is designed for 10mm speeds. Specifically, 180gr XTP is designed for speeds from 700 to 1500 ft/sec and the 200gr, from 700 to 1200 ft/sec.

I've chronographed them from my Government length and Commander length 1911's. Both results are surprisingly close, each around the 1200 ft/s top end for that bullet.

BTW, I also keep a magazine on me with Underwood's 220gr hard cast rounds since I'm within forest areas. They average about 1180 ft/s for around 650 ft-lb of energy.

I go for something moderate (between 40 S&W and nuclear) which is 180 Gold Dot @ 1,152 fps / 531# KE
Similar here if interested: http://www.doubletapammo.net/index.php?route=product/product&path=134&product_id=769
Why not nuclear?
Have 177 fps and about 28% more KE than factory 40 S&W from Glock 22: Speer Gold Dot 180 gr. @ 975 fps / 380# KE
Have as much KE as 357 Sig from Glock 31 and about 20% more KE than 230 gr. 45 Ranger T from 5'' 1911
The extra 20% KE over 230 Ranger T doesn't increase recoil, felt recoil and speed of follow up shots is same. (Speed of follow up shots a factor)
10mm also has a one round capacity advantage in 1911 platform.
Delta Elite versus 1911 in 45 acp with my chrono
10mm Handload 180 Gold Dot @ 1,152 fps / 531# KE - recoil energy 8.1 - PF 207
45 acp Federal 230 HST @ 891 fps / 406# KE - recoil energy 7.8 - PF 205
45 acp Winchester 230 Ranger T @ 915 fps / 428# KE - recoil energy 8.2 - PF 210

If I had to pick a 2nd choice it would be the Nosler 150 gr. at over 1,400 fps
10mm Handload Nosler 150 JHP @ 1,402 fps / 655# KE - recoil energy 9.4 - PF 210
10mm Handload Hornady 155 XTP @ 1,400 fps / 675# KE - recoil energy 9.6 - PF 217

I don't see the point of using a very powerful 10mm cartridge for self defense. I generally have used something not much more powerful than a 40 S&W load. That will be plenty effective, and you will have faster follow up shots if you are not dealing with the recoil of a heavier load.

10mm for hunting and for level IIIa body armor breaching using something like fort scott munitions fort defense ammo...if using a full sized pistol. It's probably more likely for a BG to spend a few extra $$s and get III+ anyways.

Short barrel 10mm...you may as well shoot 40 out of it, especially if you have a glock which can reportedly handle thousands of rounds of 40 in their 10mm pistols with no problems. Winchester white box of 50 jhp's at walmart for 22usd.

I don't see the point of not using full power 10mm for anything. If you're going to carry a 10mm, load it with 10mm. Otherwise, get a .40.

I tend to prefer heavy for caliber bullets. The 180 gr Gold Dot load from Underwood looks good. I've used a similar load from Double Tap. Also like the 200 gr Hornady XTP at around 1250 fps. I carry this pistol for woods defense and also like the advantages in penetration with the likelihood of a conflict around vehicles. Most of the time I am not at work or home, I am in or around vehicles.

The SIG load actually chronos around 1100 fps from my Glock 20, so it isn't that hot, and it seems to get less than spectacular performance from testing I've done and seen online.

That's disappointing. I shoot the FMJ as practice ammo. Guess I better get a shell plate for my Dillon. Already have the dies. Not really interested in over inflated numbers.

I use hand loaded 180 Golden Sabers. I shot an antelope that had been hit by a car to put out of it's misery. I shot it in the back of the head from about 15 yards. The bullet blew both eyeballs out of their sockets and the goat was dead before it's head hit the ground.

I have used it for the same reason on an 800 pound heifer. Shot her above the eyes. She went over backwards and hardly even kicked.

The reloads are doing somewhere around 1250 fps and do what they are intended to do.

When I moved to town, I put the 10mms away and went to 45 ACP. I think the 10 mm is too much horsepower for a SD in a populated area.

I’m a fan of Underwood 180 Gold Dots.

100% reliable in my G20 and very controllable.

I think the versatility is the best argument FOR the 10mm. When you go to town you can throttle it back to 40SW or "40SW+p" levels with just an ammo change. Drop the mag and go back to 1450 FPS heavy cast bullets or 1300 fps XTPs if you want to rev it up.

At least that's how I see it.

The only down size in the glock is the grip size/shape for some, but that can be handled too if necessary. I REALLY like the 1911 10mm though... big steel gun seems like a great match.

I carry Underwood 10mm 200 XTP in my Glock 29. They carry plenty of energy and not smack my hand like the Uw 180s does. It's a powerful round still.

Hornady 10mm 175 FlexLocks are excellent medium loads for carry too.
