Best 10mm defense ammo

It's a good article and touches on important topics. e.g. penetration, follow up shots, power levels, etc.

I would have liked some information on reliability, chrono results and accuracy. Also since we're talking about the 10mm, some discussion on brush defense ammo would be nice.

As others mentioned it can probably do without the more colorful language since it's a gun blog. If it were a MSM article, then you would want to entertain the general public, but gun people typically want the data.

Anyway, good article.

The only thing it fell short of was that Special Agents could not qualify with it because of the extra size and recoil. This is the cartridge that that the FBI scientist came up with that satisfied all there needs after extensive review of the Miami shoot out.

Hmm, interesting discussion. I just bought a 10mm. Love shooting it. It has some snort to it. It also puts holes into stuff.

It may not be for everyone as some people have weaker hands/forearms than others the 9mm should do those folks just fine. If your poor and/or don't reload it might not be the round for you, the 9mm is much cheaper to shoot.

The individual should be matched with the gun. Not everyone will have the same best gun. Get one you enjoy and practice more will be better than and discrepancy in follow up shots or recoil .

Oh heck, one more go-around:

The problem is you're basing your assumption off of "energy" in hopes that this extra "energy" will give it much better capability of stopping someone. What if your faster bullet fails to penetrate as deeply as a slower moving 155gr XTP? Will it? Likely so and energy can't make up for lack of penetration since you don't know at what angle you'll have to shoot, and pushing bullets beyond what they're designed for isn't always a smart move.

Thus, when hunting moose or bear, a 30-30 with 170gr. will perform identically to a .300 WinMag with 170gr., because the only difference is the velocity. Because "energy" doesn't really mean anything...

Reductio ad absurdam

It's a tough call. That extra energy has to be dumped in the target, provided it doesn't pass completely through. It's not just about penetration...what about shockwave/wound cavitation damage?

Bullet type, velocity, and bullet grain are a big deal for me when choosing loads for my 10mm. With full power loadings, particularly using lighter bullets, the 10mm can easily push bullets past their optimum performance thresholds. This is a typical problem with Underwood loads (who I buy from frequently) using 135-180 grain bullets.

Check out some of tnoutdoors9 ballistic gel testing on the Underwood 10mm loads. The sweet spot seems to be the 200 grain XTP at or around 1200 FPS. I suspect the Gold Dot at the same weight would have performed as well or better.

Funny you mentioned that.

Thanks for posting that. I was in a rush last night just decided to post tnoutdoors9 videos only.

Underwood is STILL the best source, both in terms of quality and pricing, for 10mm loadings. I have occasionally went with Doubletap when I'm searching for some heavy leadcast, but Underwood recently starting carrying those as well.

Underwood generally uses either the XTPs or Gold Dots...both of which are solid performers for me. I would be happy with choosing either for SD.

Underwood is certainly legit, but I do think the Federal 180 gr JSP, Hornady 175 gr Critical Duty, and the Winchester 175 gr Silvertip are all good choices, depending on your application.

I wouldn't give a cent to Double Tap due to their intentional dishonesty. Also, I think Underwood pushes some bullets a little too fast. They are a great company, though, offering what 10mm shooters have been asking for and at a reasonable price.
