So you don’t shoot out your aiming point
Plus whatever the condition is (wind) you're shooting in. It's group shooting, not shooting for score, as long as the group is inside the lines you're good.
We didn't get to wait for the calm of the evening to shoot, we shot no matter what the dang wind was doing. :)

I voted rebarrel, most because it seems like you want to put some work into it. I personally would be happy with the groups you posted and would probably stand pat and work on technique, but if you're wanting to work on shrinking them through some tinkering I think it's a good platform to use and rebarreling wouldn't be that difficult.

That's the funniest thing I've read all day. Most guns will shoot 1 hole groups in theory, Most shooter's can't.
You may be able to do it on occasion, but unless you're super human, you can't do it all the time.

I know most shooters can't do it that's why I suggested for the OP to get a good gun rest to remove him from the equation. To see if it's the gun or him. The next thing I would suggest is to try different ammo, many guns simply won't shoot cheap ammo.

Or, it's the wrong load for the barrel you do have.

Yes the ammo has a lot to do with accurate fire, that's why reloaders tune the load to match their gun.

It could be a variety of things i/e improper bedding, ammo type and weight of bullet, shooter and barrel is not broke in yet. All of this needs to be ruled out and probably a couple other things I did not mention.

I have my own range. Never been to a real one since 1988. Isn't it wonderful. After work with a day full of coffee and rushing around isn't my best time to shoot. Your lucky to have such a nice rifle. I would try to tweak it for better groups or buy a custom rifle and start over. Can you have too many nice guns

I swapped mine at 600 rounds, and sold the stock barrel for $100 IIRC, if that helps

BTW, what’s the twist on your stock barrel?

@Nature Boy what barrel did you end up getting I’m trying to figure out the dimensions of mine because I want the same contour or close that’s on the rifle now

I voted keep the barrel.

Make sure everything is torqued tight.
When are you getting any fliers ? Cold Bore ? ... 5th shot ?
I will second the get a benchrest .. even a cheap ( Caldwell ) can help your consistent return to the same position after cycling the action. And get a rear bag for it as well.

I am curious, how are you cleaning the barrel ?

Since I started using VFG felt Pellets, Kroil, and JB Bore Bright, I have seen some great groups.

Quick question for y’all does anyone know the dimensions of a savage model 12 vlp barrel I’m trying to figure out what size to order and I’m not sure thanks for the help guys

Shilen offers Savage contours, last I knew. You’d just need to do a little measurement to confirm dimensions.

I voted custom rig but if I had my own 100 yard range it would be a .22 rig. The savage .223 may shoot better with hand loads and tweaking, most shoot really well.

a nice .22 rig at 100 yards is a challenge to shoot MOA and it will help you learn wind as well as many other fundamental aspects of precision shooting including breathing, position, trigger management, etc.

oh and buy as many different brands, weights, speeds, etc of .22 ammo as you can get your hands on so you can find the ammo your gun likes. Then shoot it until you are good enough to blame the rifle if it does not group well.

Ymmv.

I am going to toss you a curve ball as I am late to the party.

This is my home range as well, actually 96 yards and if I get off my hairy butt and clean some brush I can get to a tick over 100....but there is poison ivy in there, and it looks nothing like uma therman.

I doubt you have just one rifle, grab another start working up loads for that. See just how it responds to your hand loads, you can chase this tail as long as you want to.

The model 8 I am working on really was never made to shoot at 100 yards, but I am having great fun trying to do it with different charges and bullets....just see how close the little holes can come.

Trust me it is fun.

Sorry man, I missed this question.

I think it's a straight taper, 30", Shilen select match, chambered for the 90 VLDs (the specific chamber specs has a name, but I can't remember it at the moment).

The helpful fella at Northland Shooters Supply will be able to assist you with your selection.
