I’m building a solid midrange hunting rig and I’ve started with a sauer 100 wood stocked 6.5 creed and have about $1000 to pair a good scope with it. I’ve been leaning toward a plain vx5 3-15 with cds. I’m comfortable shooting out to 500 if need be to hunt (I try to stay well within that) but want to be able to shoot steel at 1000 competently. Any recommendations or am I already on the right track here?

Hard to go wrong with Leupold. Lightweight, excellent glass, and the VX5+ have good positive turrets that lock.

But I have my biases towards Leupold.

I also like Burris, they are comparative on weight and good glass, with good turrets. For me it’s either a Leupold or Burris.

How does the vx3 glass compare to the others?

A bit of weight and savings of $$ is the advantages of the VX3HD, the glass isn’t as good but I would say closer than the price difference would lead one to believe, and off the top of my head the field of view isn’t as good. Not to say they aren’t good scopes because they are especially now they have updated them to the HD.

I think the weight would be a positive. Glass old enough for everything I’m doing?

I know our Sportsman’s warehouse if one comes towards dusk allow the customer to take a few scopes outside and see how they compare with an associate. That is ways nice to be able to do as lighting in stores and those distances don’t show much as far as clarity, distortion and light transmission.

If you want to save some money, the VX3HD have been updated to have the locking turrets of the VX5/6
I second this. I love my 3HD. You can grab one for under a grand as well. I paid just under 800 for mine. Leupold is very hard to beat at the price point you are looking at.

Vortex is on par as well, but not as many options at the same price point.

If you don't mind spending a little more...Leica is a great choice. German optics, very solid mechanics...but they start coming in at around 1400

If he'd like to get a Leica for ~$1000

Just a heads up, but my Vx-3hd has the ZeroLock turret and it only allows one turn up, which is fine for hunting to 500ish, but wont get me to the longer ranges we shoot targets at.
I recently purchased a VX-3HD and what LoonWulf is saying about one turn up is true. Still the clarity of the optics and it's performance made it a good choice for me . Plus it has the Luepold CDS setup which I like. Bought mine new for a little under $900.00. It also has the side focus that is a big plus for me.

I have the VX3 4.5x14 with CDS on all of my Hunting rifles and really like them for the price point and glass. They are great for early morning or dusk shooting as well. I don't shoot over 500 yds at the range and even less in the field so the one turn lock on the cds is no issue. I had one Vortex and was not impressed and they are heavy as well. Shop around and you can sometimes find them on sale...

My 7 mag deer rifle has a VX-6 2-12 with Firedot. The Firedot is most excellent for low light situations. Bright enough to see, small enough to be unobtrusive. If I were buying for what you’re doing I’d be getting a 3-18. I have no idea of the price, but I suspect they may exceed $1,000. Dunno.

When I got my 2-12 it was around the $1,000 range IIRC.

I haven’t bought a scope in years so prices and features plus brands may have changed considerably.
