So here is my question to everyone out there. I for some reason am interested in attempting a shot of 1000 yards. There is a military base where I live, and I have access to their 1000 yard range. My question for you guys is this. Which of my rifles (if any) will take me out to 1000 yards, and which will be most reliable?

Ruger M-77 22-250
Remington 700 7mm Mag
Remington Model 7 .270
M1 Garand 30-06, open sights
AR-15 .223 1:9 Twist, 24" bbl.
8mm Mauser
Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R

I am also set up to reload for 22-250, .223 and 30-06. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Your 7mm Mag with heavy bullets is a good start. If you send me your load data, estimated velocity of your bullet (based on the books, your rifle barrel length, or choronographed results), I can calculate how high you have to put your bullet at 100 yards to be "on" target at 1000. Email me @ [email protected]. For instance, my .300 Win Mag witha 200gr. Sierra BT Match bullet @ 2830fps. needs to hit about 29.4" high at 100 *****.

Remington 700 in 7mm Mag.

Several of the others could make it out that far but considering the rifles they will be shot out of I think the 7mm would be your best bet in my opinion.

Ruger M-77 22-250..........Bulloet too light, wind drift

Remington 700 7mm Mag........Should work with 150, 160, 162 and 175 boat-tails, depending on the wind that day...

Remington Model 7 .270.........Might work with heavy boat-tails

M1 Garand 30-06, open sights...Bullet will get there, but group size would be huge with iron sights. Would be fun with a good spotter helping out.

AR-15 .223 1:9 Twist, 24" bbl..... Nope, same problem at 22-250

8mm Mauser,....bullet would get there with good hand loads but 8x57s are not known for their super accuracy at 300 yards much less 1,000

Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R..... same problem as above.

What kind of a sight system do you have on the 7mm mag? 1000 yds is a lot of adjustment or a lot of hold over.

I don't know what accuracy you're trying to achieve but I would say all 3 mil-surps would be contenders. Of the rifles listed, I would probably pick the 7mm Mag. I'm working on a similar project myself. I changing a Savage 110 from 30.06 to .300 Win. Mag.

Good luck with your project and keep us posted.

There are some good videos on YouTube of people shooting long range. I like the mil-surp videos the best.

Either the Remington 700 7mm Mag or the Remington Model 7 .270 will work, assuming you use good ammo. Use whichever has the better scope. You will need to dial-in approximately 30MOA of elevation from a 100 yard zero, so I would check and make sure your scope has that much elevation adjustment. Shooting at 1,000 yards is not all that hard and a lot of fun. Enjoy!

Model-7 in .270 WSM would be interesting with Sierra 135 gr Match Kings. I've used them well at long range in standard .270 Win.

If you shoot at it enough with the Garand sooner or later you'll hit it, that would be the most fun. But if you really want to do it right, I'm with everybody else....7 mag.

Now question #2
What Scope?

the remmy's, the garand, and the nagant can all do it. use 170-175's for the nagant, there is someone out there, a country that is, that uses a hotloaded 170-175 grainer, and it was used as their longrange/gpmg/volley fire round; it will def get you out there. if you use the 270, look for bullets at least 160 grains. the 30.06 should do it, with anything over 160 grains. the 7mag should be the best, if you can find 160's or heavier for it as well...
