I'm trying to learn as much as possible about 10mm. After learning about the ballistics of the ammo (volosity and foot lbs) I would like to learn about the best ammo weight/difference between personal defence vs beat ammo weight for hunting.

For self defense the .40 S&W makes more sense due to weight of ammo, price, and availability. If you reload then only the extra weight of the gun and ammo is a slight problem.

As far as hunting goes, I have to pass. I have no experience hunting with a 10 mm (.40 cal.).

If you are able to control the recoil, hollowpoints for defense and hard-cast SWCs of around 180 grains for deer/hogs at reasonable distances--which for me would be no more that fifty yards or so.

I had a Delta Elite when they first came out. Good gun, but a bit much for casual range-toy use. As with various .44 Mags, I could hit with it just fine, but not in range-toy type use.

I like a good controlled expansion 200 gr bullet for hunting with the 10MM. Buffalo Bore has some very good choices in 10MM for hunting.

10mm is extremely versatile. You can buy or handload ammo comparable to 40 S&W for personal defense. In fact many of the guns will function just as well with 40 S&W ammo in the magazine as they do with 10mm ammo. My Glocks do. I like 155-165 gr HP bullets for this at around 1200-1350 fps.

For hunting typical deer/black bear game a good 180-200 HP at 1200-1300 fps is every bit as good as any 357 magnum load and closer to 44 mag than most people think. If you are hunting larger game or for bear protection I'd use DoubleTaps 200 gr hardcast loads at 1300 fps. This is for those times where penetration is everything and you're willing to sacrifice expansion.
