10mm Auto Hunting Results

Is anyone using 10mm auto on small deer or a meat pig?

What is the brand, model number, and barrel length of pistol used?
If the pistol has been modified, what modifications were made?

What were the general results? Did the animal go down immediately? Were you pleased with the 10mm? Were you shooting a deer of pig? What was the distance to the animal? How many shots were needed? Where was the animal hit and how much penetration did you get? Were you able to recover the projectile? What was the brand of the ammunition? What is the bullet weight and type? What was the ending bullet weight and diameter? Did the projectile mushroom and stay within the jacket?

Were you using a reload? Please specify: case brand and length, primmer brand and type, powder brand and quantity, projectile brand weight and type, cartridge overall length, general results, number shots, distance, penetration, Were you able to recover the projectile? What is the starting and ending weight. What is the final bullet diameter? Did the projectile mushroom and stay within the jacket?

If you are using a cast bullet, what brand, bullet type, bullet weight, and hardness.

If you are casting your own, mold brand, bullet weight, bullet type, bullet lube, alloy used, alloy hardness, sizing diameter. Is the bullet a plain base, bevel base or gas check design? What is the nose design and meplat diameter. Were you able to recover the projectile?

Any comments on wound diameter and penetration?

Have you chronographed the load used?

Were you pleased with the 10mm’s performance?

Once again thanks for the information. Any chance you would supply more? Handloader June 2008 has a nice article on reloading 10mm in Kimber Stainless II. You might enjoy the article, if you have not already read it, and it is not too "old hat".

I am sorry to say I can't post any results, as I have yet shot a deer or pig with my 10mm. From asking people I respect and other hunters I carry Hornady 200gr. JHP/XTP. My Delta Elite by Chuck Warner or CWarner on these sites is always on my hip when I'm hunting.

I was with my brother when he shot a 100 lb whitetail with my Glock 20. Handloaded 200 grain XTP at 1200 FPS. 25 yards broadside through the shoulder. Bang-flop. Sizeable exit wound through opposite shoulder.

I have taken several wild hogs with my Colt Delta Elite 10mm using Hornady 200 grain rounds. Some pigs were very large (350 lbs) and dropped as quick too.

I want to thank the people that are taking the time to respond to the poll and who are sharing their hunting results and, also, those of you who are sending in photo of their pistols.

My 10mm is a plain Kimber Stainless Target II. It is interesting to see the elegant and nice weapons others are using.

Again, I wish to thank you for any information you provide. I am still wondering about the penetration and wound channel of various loads on game. Any comments are welcome.

To some of the people that have had bad results with the 10mm, please share as it helps to form a balanced opinion.

glock 20 with handloaded 200 gr XTP's as well. 2 good sized does both DRT at 15 and 35 yds. both behind shoulder shots. only 1 exited (the 35 yd shot), the other lodged under offside skin. wound channels were good (maybe 4 or 5"?) but exit wound was nominal, MAYBE an inch).

Dropped several Florida hogs using a Glock G20SF and handloaded ammo topped with 200 gr XTPs. Smallest hog was 85 lbs, the largest was 165 lbs. Chrono running at 1200+ fps. All shots were 40 to 65 yards. All exited but one shot. The 10mm will bust right thru the gristle plate.

Well mine is one of those love it or hate it IAI Javelina's with the 7" barrel. Let me start off by saying that the areas we hunt hogs in is thick underbrush and overgrown river bottom terrain. Most of the shots I have taken were sometimes measured in feet or inches rather than yards. I use the same load for all of the 180gr bullets I tried so they are about as equal as I can get them. Also, we shoot LOTS of hogs on a yearly basis. We, my hunting pardoner and close friend, have found them to be the best test media for new loads of anything we have tried. If it will work well on the hogs anything else is a cake walk. Most of the ones we get are in the 80 - 100 pound range but there are the occasional ones that bust the 250 up to just under 400 pound mark. That's the challenge about it we never know up front hog many or how big they will be when we head in after them. I usually shoot for just below the ear but when things are happening fast I shoot for meat and worry about "what" meat it is when things settle down.

I have used several bullets with it for hog patrol with mixed results. I say this as I feel that there just isn't much more of a test of a bullet than to put it to task on a big hog.

Of the several bullets I have tried out, I found that 180gr Remington Golden Sabre to be the worst performer in penetration, but the best in accuracy from my pistol.

Next to it I found the Nosler 180 to be very accurate but seemingly soft jacketed and usually separated from the core when anything other then meat was hit.

Remington and Winchester bulk 180's are both pretty much about equal in both accuracy and performance. I have used them for years on hogs with one shot stops being the norm with proper hits.

My overall favorite has got to be the Gold Dot 180's. They just work and work well on anything I have put them to task on. Of the few I have found, they were perfectly mushroomed and at the end of a nice wound channel which dispatched the hog in the usually quick fashion I have come accustomed to.

The load I use produces 1350fps on average for the latter three bullets listed and a bit more for the Rem GS. I use AA-9, Win WLP primers, and Starline cases, exclusively for these loads. For my past and whatever future uses I have for them, I feel that this is plenty adequate for the caliber. I do have several boxes of 200gr bullets to try out this year if I get around to loading them up. Right now however they are pretty near the bottom of the "need to load" list.
