I was trying out some new 10mm Handloads today and got some impressive results. My load is a 180gr FMJ over a charge of Blue Dot. I loaded these pretty hot...only about 0.2gr under book max. They should be around 1200+ ft/s.

Here is my Tree and Target frame.

Here is a target for reference. This target is approx 11 in wide. I would estimate that this pine tree is about 10-12in thick.

So this 10mm load was able to penetrate 10-12in of live pine tree and knock the bark off the back. I thought this was pretty impressive!

180 @ 1,200 isn't hot, not even from a compact gun. From a 5" gun, full loads are another 200 FPS.

Blue Dot is a good powder, but not the best for 10mm. When you're ready, dabble in the world of IMR800x. We were putting 200 gr. XTP's through 14" timbers ;)

I said "relatively" hot because they are close to a max book load. Not smoking hot. I am not sure how fast those loads are actually going. The book says a max load of Blue Dot should push those to about 1290ft/s from a five inch barrel. Past experience has shown that the 4 5/8in Glock barrel gets you a little less. Probably 1250ft/s with a max load. So these loads being just under a max load are probably somewhere north of 1200ft/s.

For reference, i load my bulk plated 180gr target loads to about 1100ft/s. Thats still 480ft-lb of energy which is pretty stout for a target load. :)

The local steel plate range prefers I not shoot 180gr, 1350ft/s 10mm at their steel...cant imagine why:evil:.

I do have a can of 800x and I plan on breaking that out at some point. I like Blue Dot because it gets you pretty close to book loads and the listed pressures are still reasonable.

Interesting. Is that the flat nose of the bullet sticking out of the wood?

I'd bet the didn't move even an inch after that first shot!
Sounds like you found the miracle "one shot stop!"
:p

Ok gotta ask howcome you are shooting trees? dipsticks around her shoot the hell out of them and kill them! That said if its on your property none of my bussiness.

To Buford, that is my tree in my backyard. I agree its irresponsible to go onto someone elses land and blast holes in thier trees.

To CTGunner, yes. Those pictures are of a FMJ that penetrated all the way thru the tree and knocked the bark off the backside. Not all of the shots did this. In fact most stopped somewhere inside the tree, but I still think its impressive and it makes for neat picture.

The one picture looks like the base of the bullet. But your saying it penetrated and just flatened the nose profile of the bullet?

Revolverguy, I believe the bullets were flat nosed to begin with..

Sargent, why have the LW barrel? Do you cast your own bullets?just curious..
