10mm Brass Shortage?

When I picked up my then new G40 I also picked up two boxes each of the S&B 180 FMJ, and JHP'S. At the time they were under $20 per box.

They shot great and at 25yds were grouping with my handloads. Granted they aren't loaded to nuclear specs but they shoot rather well considering, and prices being what they are in most cases you can hardly get 20-25rds in 10mm for less than $30.

I didn't notice the primer pockets being snug but I load with a 4x4 press and have a lot of leverage. I've been carrying those loads while mowing on the tractor in case I jump a hog(s).. figured I'd rather loose that brass than my Starline.

Nothing like paying a premium for 40s&w.:(
The fastest way to break them down is to shoot them.:)
If they are safe, I shoot them. I won’t waste time making them perfect when I really just want to shoot.
I understand what you’re saying…. but, I have 2 boxes, was thinking, S&B 180@1164= power factor of 202, where I want to be is PF of 235+. So keep one box for factory self defense, until I can replace with Super Nuke 10mm. Other box, pull them, and load them to 1325-ish!

I need to find some heavy 200+ grain Very hard cast bullets for when I’m in the trails.

$20 a box! that cheaper then reloading them. Last 180gn .400 I bought was for .40S&W was $16/100. Primers $.06, powder $.02 (i think), brass $.20.. that come up to $.24 with out brass.

I bought 500 casing from starline to get me started in 10mm. I have not needed to buy more since. I been getting lucky to find more than i wore out. The past few months i been finding more 10mm brass than 40sw. It has me thinking maybe 10mm is getting more popular.
I still like .40 because I have so much brass and .400 bullets. But, I hope 10mm makes a comeback again. Would love to get a bucket of 10mm brass for $25!!!

I might freak y'all out, but we never bought 10MM rounds for the officers who used that cannon. The Glock 10MM ate the (shorter) .40 cal just fine, and there is no 'Glock Smile' on the cases fired from the 10MM..

4 real??? what was wrong with the brass

Primer pockets seemed "tight to fit" for CCI (I didn't try any other brand).
Even with case lube, sizing seemed harder than "normal" to me.

Granted these were .30 M1 Carbine cases.

I do remember loading some 9mm and some .40 s&w cases that had similar issues, but not as difficult as the M1 cases.

They just seemed different to load than other brand cases ( Starline, Winchester, Federal, Remington-Peters ).

I have had some similar issues with Herter's , which I am led to believe is manufactured by S&B..

Just my $0.02 worth.....:)

I think I had the same issue with 9mm S&B,
was very tight to resize… oooh well

When I first bought my 10mm, Midway had S&B 50 round boxes for about $14. The loads are pretty anemic, but hey, cheap brass. When I started reloading the brass, I noticed that the primer pockets were tight, there was almost a crimp around the top of the pocket. I didn't have a swage or a uniformer at the time so I just hit each pocket with a 60 degree countersink bit. It didn't completely alleviate the seating difficulty, they definitely required more upward force to seat the primer than other brass, but I didn't crush anymore primers. At first I sorted the S&B brass and loaded it in a separate batch, but after a couple loadings it behaves like normal brass. It is quality brass once you get the primer pocket broke in..

YMMV

Most factory 10mm is loaded pretty weak for 10mm. Most of the brass I have I bought new as I can load new brass cheaper than current factory ammo prices.

Now I remember 9mm S&B brass… I loaded them separately, super tight

I agree, this is so they can meet the self defense protocols ex. 15-18" gel penetration, not hit so fast that the hollow points fragment, nor have over penetration. Etc. Etc. Etc. Most hollow points designed for personal protection in the .400 and .355 diameter were designed for a specific velocity range. What im saying is most modern hollow point bullets being used now in a lot of 10mm loads were designed for use in the 40 S&W and perform at the 1,000-1,100fps range. (Yes, 10mm is parent to the 40, but the 40 dominated the .400 pistol world for the last nearly 3 decades)
Now, the stuff marketed for specifically hunting, that will be loaded to full power and usually contain a projectile that will hold together well, and have great expansion and Penetration. And I must add that XTPs work awesome in full tilt 10mm loads!!

Back on point, there has been a resurrection in 10mm popularity, obviously. The brass supply (and ammo supply) may lag behind the demand for awhile. All that being said, the 44 Magnum has been popular for 60+ years, and finding/buying brass for that right now is rediculous too.

Did I mention how much I hate chasing 10mm brass across the floor?

I have a 40 cal. Glock and a 10mm glock. so I have two die sets with crimp dies for caliber set up. I hate readjusting dies for the different calibers. Same with 38spl and 357mag. 44spl & 44mag.
Indeed, futzing with dies is tedious. I went with Redding die spacers for calibers .38 (.135) and .44 cal (.125). The 40SW/10 AUTO space (.142) is close to the .38.

I am absolutely shocked, SHOCKED I tell you to hear that 10mm brass is more expensive than the much more common 9mm. Like, you'd think something that's less common, thus has lower supply, would not cost any more, yeah?

Prices are what they are, supply & demand.

Back awhile ago I seen a set of 9mm RCBS dies bid up to $205 and still had three more days to go.

It's crazy what people are willing to pay.

At a local gun show a guy was selling large rifle primers for $250 a thousand.
Small rifle primers for $350 a thousand.

I wouldn't shoot at them prices.

Just got into 10mm and Wow is the brass expense. I got about 80 range pickups and that will work fine for load development. But, was shopping for more… used $.20-$.23 each - new $.22-$.30 each. What Gives?

Then I seen one of my locals had loaded 180g JHP for $27/50 factory ammo. Should I break my cardinal rule and buy Factory Ammo???
You have a cardinal rule to not buy factory ammo? How restrictive…

I am the same way. I've never shot a factory 38 or 357 round in my life...

I respect y’all that you prefer reloading. I’m a bit jealous honestly, but I’m taking steps to get back at it in the near future.

But I was kinda being a jerk pulling on Mark’s chain….just for a bit of fun. Didn’t mean to hurt any feelings.

It's impossible to hurt my feelings I used to hold the flashlight for my dad when he worked on the car

Same here. I swaged the pockets and they're GTG.
S&B brass that I’ve worked with had tight primer pockets.

Loaded rounds for just 2x the price on Starline brass I acquired earlier this year? That's a decent price especially at these days. I wouldn't pull them, I'd shoot them even if they're FBI loads.
I just bought 2 boxes of S&B 180JHP. $28/50 wonder what the speed is??

Starline 10mm brass is extremely high quality and affordable. I bought a thousand pieces a year ago and many have been fired thrice with no smile through my glock 20.

Money well spent.
