a good friend of mine is getting around 1,700 fps with a 150gr hard cast out of his 10mm carbine, and is looking for a JHP in that aprx weight for deer hunting that will stay together. I suggested he look at Hornady’s XTP bullet, but he told me that the XTP is only good up to around 1,500 fps. I did suggest he look a Lehigh’s 150gr Xtreme Hunter. Lastly, my friend is hoping for a complete pass through, as he has lost a few deer that have crossed his property line into state owned land. Any thoughts on a bullet that would suit his needs?

I would go heavy for caliber for hunting bullets. I used the 200 gr XTP at 1250fps from my S&W 610. One of the two does had an XTP go through a shoulder blade and spine and still exited. I have never recovered a XTP from a deer they have always exited.

Barnes or A-frame.
Eta, he may be LAUNCHING them at 1700, but did Hornady confirm top speed of 1500 or top IMPACT speed of 1500? One is not the other....

XTP Mag bullets have a higher expansion velocity threshold. Edit: never mind they only offer these in .45 and .50.

Barnes offerings are always good as well.

Absolutely, as would I, I’ve taken a few deer with Underwood’s 200gr XTP 10mm, and was very effective, granted my shots are 25 yards or less, plus I’ve never thought deer were that difficult to bring down. Now a hog or a bear, that’s a different story

Amen again. 150 grain bullets are barking up the wrong tree for sure. 180-200 grains would be a much better choice.

Barnes 155 HP is really the best option for a fast hunting round out of a 10mm. The good is that it is a long bullet that will stay together. The bad is that length limits powder capacity to about 10 grains limited by case OAL, give or take, depending on powder density. The other bad is that once it hits, the parachute opens, so to speak. Puts deer down in a hurry. At 1700 fps, it will punch thru a deer. At 1400 fps, a hard cast is more reliable.

I’m getting 1400 fps with CFE-Pistol powder and the 155 from a 6 inch barrel 10mm. Zero muzzle flash.

L-R 180 grain 357, 155 grain 10mm, 335 grain 45 colt
