I bought a old 11-48 in 410. Gun was really clean. I went and shot it today and had some problems with it cycling. I shot both 3" and 2 1/2" shells since barrels says 3" or shorter. Same problem with both. When the gun shoots, the bolt and barrel remain locked back. I have to physically grab the barrel and pull it forward which results in a stovepipe and or jamb with the live round and spent round jammed in the receiver. Any ideas why the barrel would be getting stuck with the bolt and not coming back forward. When there is no shells in the gun I can grab the barrel and lock it back manually by pushing the barrel back. Bolt locks back as it should and barrel slides free back to where it should be. My guess is maybe the actual chamber has some issues. I'm thinking when the shell is shot maybe it's expanding too much not allowing the barrel to move freely as the spent shell it stuck. Anyone have similar problems or recommendations.

I'm new to those guns and havent even fired mine but here is what I think by reading about them and looking at mine..

1. I bought 2 different kind of shells. One kind drops in a chamber freely and another kind won't go unless you push it in a little. So, check those shells, they might be sticking. I read somewhere those guns don't like new plastic shellse.

If I will have this kind of problem I will go ahead and hone chamber a little. It's just my idea, let's see what others say.

2. When it locks back I wonder if friction ring is actually getting stuck on a magazine tube. Take front grip off, take spring off. Make sure there is some oil on a tube and check for marks, I think if ring slides back and hits rough/dry spot - it should be visible.

I thought about honing the chamber but I'll wait on that. The 410 does not have a friction ring, only the spring. Mag tube is well oiled. I tried it lightly oiled, and well oiled. No difference. Thanks for your thoughts though.

When there is no shells in the gun I can grab the barrel and lock it back manually by pushing the barrel back

The barrel should not lock back, it should move forward as soon as it is released. If the barrel is locking up as it recoils into the receiver, pull the trigger group and check the inside of the receiver as there is something causing the barrel to hang up.

The .410 doesn't use a friction ring, just a recoil spring.

That is correct! No friction ring on the ..........410 model. I have a manual for that gun if you like.

The barrel should return and not hold back toward the receiver regardless of what pushed it back. I say a disassembll, cleaning and lubrication is warranted. Secondly, since this gun is new to you, make sure all of the parts are actually there.

Thank you for your responses and suggestions. I have already taken the gun apart and cleaned everything. The gun was pretty clean when you think how old the gun was. I initially shot the gun when I put it back together and thought I didn't lube it up good enough so I came back, wiped it down and then oiled it. While it certainly helped as it was smooth as a babies but, it still locked back after shooting. Even when I manually try to eject live shells by pushing the barrel back it fails to eject and feed correctly. Using the charging handled the shells eject and chamber just fine. Think I'll look for a good gunsmith in the area.

my stepdad had an 11-48 in 410 and it was really fun to shoot. I only shot 3 inch shells in and the action cycling was actually louder than the gun firing. somebody had went and put a Morgan adjustable pad on it. unfortunately his grandkids got it when he died. hopefully they kept it instead of selling it

Punch the two pins and pull the trigger group leaving the bolt and barrel installed. Push the barrel rearwards and see where it is hanging up. Should be fairly easy to see.

Hoghunting, that's the thing, it won't do it unless I shoot it. When I push the barrel back it locks the bolt back as it should but the barrel stayed free. I can't get the barrel to lock back, or malfunction, unless it's shot.

Take the recoil spring off, and reassemble try and slide the barrel backwards and forwards be sure there is no binding anywhere.

Have you tried different shotgun shells? The brass or plastic might be expanding too much upon firing and sticking in the chamber. You might also try putting a .45 cal brass brush on a section of cleaning rod and chucking it in a drill. Put some cleaning solvent on it and spin it in the chamber.

I have tried the different shells. The chamber cleaning and even polishing is my next try. After that, I'm not sure what else I can do. Thanks for your suggestions.
