If this were a discussion of reducing feral hog numbers, I doubt ethics and sportsmanship would weigh so heavily.

That said, I would not stretch conventional small pellet, (000B, 00B), buckshot much beyond 40 yards with a well tested shotgun/choke/load combination.

Thank God I don't have to hunt with people with attitudes like yours Krispy.

Two inches of shotgun barrel is pretty meaningless for velocity. They seem to peak and plateau somewhere in the early teens, barrels in the 24+" range often develop less velocity than an 18-20" barrel.
I don't know where this MYTH got started, but that is exactly what it is. I know; I have chronographed many loads. The amount of velocity gain per inch falls off, but the velocity does not drop off up to at least 30" in a 12, or 32" in a 10.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I absolutely disagree with the statement above. If you are going to kill anything - be it housefly, mouse, no matter what - be as quick and clean about it as possible.

Only some kind of monster inflicts deliberate torture.

My father's father, who was pretty much the finest man I ever knew, told me long long ago, not in so many words but through a lifetime of lessons - "Son, you cannot create life, not even something as lowly as an ant. Do not ever take lightly the fact that that you have the power to inflict death." I grew up on the farm that he owned. Killing was a fact of life, from a chicken for the pot to hog killing time in the fall to feral dogs and rabid foxes, injured livestock that had to be put down, from hunting squirrels and rabbits, you name it, killing was a fact of life.

Cruelty was not.

Lee:

You misinterpret my statement for I certainly agree with you.

My intended point was that Feral Hogs are often viewed as vermin to be eradicated rather than game animals. Witness aerial hog shooting in Texas and Alabama WMA regulations that limit small game season hog hunters to .22 rimfires and shotguns with birdshot. These practices virtually encourage throwing ethical considerations to the wind.

In the situation presented, the County Airport Authority - a government agency, encouraged hunters to treat Deer as vermin to be eradicated.

To those who were critical of my post i say TOUCHE'.....to the others who offered advice i say thankyou..i feel the need to try to explain the 100 yard remark..instead of saying we take 100 yard shots i should have said SOME take 100 yard shots. some of our club members are goose hunters who prefer to shoot at moving game... with their $ 1200.00 3 1/2" mag Benelli's and PatternMaster choke tubes they get some impressive shot patterns at 75 yards.. the goose boys have tried the Dixie tri-ball but is a little slower than the Winchester load....they say they get more pellets in t he kill zone. myself and most of the club members limit our shots to 50 yards..as far as wounded deer go ,we don't lose many...with equal amounts of walkerhounds and beagles the deer are quickly found and dispatched.. any meat not claimed by clubmembers is donated to HUNTERS FOR THE HUNGARY for use in the holiday season at homeless shelters...

Let me say first of all that I am in no way defending the hunting practices of the OP. I will say however, that I have seen similar policies that were in place in similar circumstances and they were officially APPROVED by wildlife management. I do not believe that government has the right to dictate ethics or morals, but as unsavory as this may be, it is the law in some parts, and in more than many of us would like to see. I do not like a lot of what the government crams down my throat, but I am hesitant to rebuke anyone operating within the law. If you don't like that, then get the law changed. But in a nation governed by rule of law, you have to respect the law, no matter how much you disagree with it...which as I stated upfront I DO!

After reading this thread the only thing I can possibly say is that anyone who even tries to justify the inhumane killing of any animal is FUBAR.

first of all i would like to thank all of the responders to my original post. off my second post i did not intend to offend anyone by the methods employed by some of our club members...i know that ethics are important to a vast majority of the public.....i would like for this thread to end to prevent any further discord among highroad posters.
last and most important I want to thank the HighRoad.org for this website...it is very informative and i have not taken offense from any posts......LONG LIVE the highroad.org.
