To: New York State Residents
Dutchess County Legislator Joel Tyner (Clinton/Rhinebeck) believes strongly in the Second Amendment to our Constitution and the right of every New Yorker and American to bear arms to defend themselves-- and hunt, for that matter; he's been clear about this his entire life.
However, it is also true that 140 police and sheriff's departments across our state have signed a resolution in support of the Assembly majority's legislation for an assault weapon ban and an armor piercing ammunition ban-- because one in every five law enforcement officers murdered in the line of duty is killed with an assault weapon.
It is also a fact that 50-caliber sniper weapons can be used to disable commercial aircraft and helicopters and are powerful enough to penetrate steel plating. These dangerous weapons which are used extensively by the United States military, are accurate from over one mile away. Sadly, they continue to be available for purchase in New York by anyone who can buy a rifle.
A report from the nationally-renowned Violence Policy Center found that these weapons have been purchased by the Al Qaeda terrorist network and used by other domestic and international terrorist organizations. It was the terrorist threat of .50 caliber sniper rifles that prompted even G.O.P. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign legislation in California to restrict the .50 caliber rifle to military and law enforcement officials only.
According to the Center for Policy Alternatives, "A September 2004 Harris Interactive Poll reported that 60 percent of Americans favor 'stricter gun control,' while only 32 percent favor “less strict gun control.” The same poll found that 71 percent of Americans favor and only 26 percent oppose 'a ban prohibiting the sale of assault rifles and high capacity ammunition magazines.' A 2001 Lake Snell Perry & Associates poll found that: 92 percent of Americans and 86 percent of gun owners favor criminal background checks for all gun sales; 85 percent of Americans and 73 percent of gun owners favor handgun licensing; and 83 percent of Americans and 72 percent of gun owners favor the registration of all new handguns."

Hopefully one day soon more of our state representatives in Albany will stand up for us, public safety, and simple common sense-- and not the extremist agenda of the NRA.
Seven Common-Sense Gun Control Laws That Should Be Law Now:
[Fact: Joel Miller voted against all of them on January 9th.]
1. Stopping Assault Weapons (A.2466-A/Lavelle)
2. Banning Armor Piercing Ammunition (A.2837/Koon)
[note-- hopefully good compromise legislation can be passed that allows frangible bullets only to be used legally on firing ranges]
3. Banning 50-Caliber Weapons (A.4471-A/Eddington)
4. Cracking Down on Illegal Street Gun Trafficking (A.9280/Paulin)
5. Tracking Guns Involved In Crimes (A.2213/Koon)
6. The Children's Weapon Accident Prevention Act (A.673-A /Weisenberg)
7. Childproofing Firearms (A.2302/Englebright)
