Two-Month-Old Doused With Pepper Spray In Feud At Wal-Mart

PONDERAY, Idaho -- A woman doused a 2-month-old girl with pepper spray while feuding with the infant's family in a Wal-Mart, police said.

Lorlie M. Gantenbein, 36, of Sagle, was charged Tuesday with felony injury to a child. She was released on $5,000 bail.

The 2-month-old girl was recovering at home after being sprayed Monday, police Chief Mike Hutter said. The infant was treated at a hospital.

Gantenbein in a telephone interview on Wednesday denied using the pepper spray. She said her 16-year-old daughter used the spray, but did so in self-defense.

Gantenbein said she bought the spray for her daughter as tensions rose between the two families after the Gantenbeins rented property to the baby's family and then evicted them. The feud escalated when her daughter began dating the baby's father, she added.

According to police, Gantenbein's daughter sprayed the infant's grandmother and aunt, one of whom was holding the child. Gantenbein then took the canister and sprayed the baby, authorities said. The juvenile was cited with two counts of battery.

In the phone interview, Gantenbein said the baby's aunt grabbed her daughter by the arm, prompting the daughter to use the pepper spray. When the grandmother reached toward Gantenbein's daughter, the girl sprayed her too, Gantenbein said.

"The grandmother ran through the fog with the baby," she said. "It didn't get hit in the face."

However, the baby's mother, Christina Clayburn, told Spokane, Wash.'s KHQ-TV that Gantenbein "was yelling, 'Get the baby! Get the baby!' ... Then she took the Mace out of her daughter's hand and sprayed it directly into my daughter's face."

Gantenbein's daughter was cited for two counts of misdemeanor battery, Hutter said.

"We're taking statements from both sides and evaluating it from there," he said.

I am vastly impressed these people have the intelligence to remember to breathe.

And they are reproducing. Great. :scrutiny:

Some people shouldn't be allowed to breed. Spraying OC in the direction of an infant...bloody genius.

Sound a bit like the story posted a few weeks ago, aobut the little shoot-out down in Florida, with the Shakesperian drama added.

...tensions rose between the two families after the Gantenbeins rented property to the baby's family and then evicted them. The feud escalated when her daughter began dating the baby's father, she added.

Families without adults always seem to end up in newspaper stories.

Actually this sounds like one of those stories where a lot more needs to be known. Based purely on the evicted renters aspect of it I'm leaning towards the pepper sprayers being in the right. If Big Mama and her equally large fellow genetic misfires are grabbing your ass one may not think about them being sufficiently stupid to wave a kid around as a shield...

Just voicing another side...and I have evicted a few real winners over the years... *shudder*

Just makes me wonder how old the father is, and where he was at during all of this :uhoh:

And while the initial spraying of the two older women may (read: MAY) have been right, this:
Gantenbein then took the canister and sprayed the baby, authorities said. The juvenile was cited with two counts of battery.
was in no way self-defense, especially when coupled with this:
Spokane, Wash.'s KHQ-TV that Gantenbein "was yelling, 'Get the baby! Get the baby!' ... Then she took the Mace out of her daughter's hand and sprayed it directly into my daughter's face."

Given that death or grave bodily harm can occur to a child (especially an infant) sprayed like that, the grandmother would have been catching a couple of rounds.

Now which version sounds more likely to you? My vote goes for the first quote, with our evicted tennants simply looking for a bit more revenge factor, especially in light of their own stupidity in initiating the confrontation with a child present. Funny nobody pointed out that fact...

I'm really just playing Devils Advocate here but I do tend to believe the Sprayers as opposed to the Sprayees. I'm kind of curious what it is that makes others here believe the opposite?

Ive read this story a couple of times in different forums. I still am confused over who did what. If the person holding the baby was not involed, then they should hang the sprayer. If the holder of the baby was an active participant, ie.. yelling, charging, threatening, then that person should be hung along side of the other one. Stupid senario time. If a big threatening bg with a gun in one hand and a baby in the other comes at you, and it was quite clear to you that he means you bodily harm, do you shoot? Lets put him at 20 feet and the only way out was a side ways run of 40 feet on either side. Assuming that he could shoot like us ,in other words we will surely got nailed. What would you do.
good shootin
kid

No gun content, so I'm gonna close this one.

But, much like Jerry Springer, I'll leave you with this...Final Thought.

Most of the people in both of those families are over 18.

And their vote counts just as much as yours.
