I thought of visiting the Connecticut Cabelas while driving through the state, and was told by Cabelas on the phone that there is a 14 wait to out of state purchasers.

Is this a Connecticut rule or a Cabelas rule? Of course, it only applies to long guns.

It's CT. Even state residents have a 14-day wait if they don't have a pistol permit or hunting license.

Good to know. Makes a trip to a gun show in Connecticut not worth the ride.

Funny, even New Jersey has a zero wait on long gun purchases by New Jersey residents with the Firearms card.

Question, can an out of state resident buy a long gun in New Jersey from an FFL?

TurtlePhish, do you know if a NY State pistol permit would exempt me from the 14-day wait for a long gun in CT?

I'm pretty sure it would if NY has reciprocity with CT, but I don't know our reciprocity states off the top of my head. I would think we do- seems like an NY permit is a bit harder to get. Plus you guys are right next to us.

No, it wouldn't- even if ct had reciprocity or recognition, which we don't. Reciprocity is irrelevant- the dealer calls in the transfer to CSP in part based on document type (eg. Long gun on a pistol permit)- out of state permits/ licenses are irrelevant to them. There are five documents that exempt an individual from the 14-day wait:
1) Connecticut Pistol Permit
2)Connecticut Eligibility Certificate
3)Connecticut Hunting License
4)Military ID (Reserve or Active)
5)Police ID (out of state is a no-go, according to SLFU)

If a non-resident has a qualifying document, they can avoid the wait- just like a resident.

Your NYS permit is worth exactly squat when you purchase outside of NYS. Same is true for any other state based permits.

Does CT offer a non-resident pistol permit?

Yes, you can get one by mail from the state police. It's actually easier and more affordable for non-residents than residents. Many people tell prospective CT residents to get their permit as a non-resident and do a change of address after arrival for those reasons. (It takes about 8 weeks to get a CT permit as a non-resident).

Non-residents can also buy a CT hunting license to avoid the waiting period.

Shipping to local FFL costs me about $100 but no sakes tax.

There may be no sales tax; however, according to state law, you must pay a use tax equivalent to the sales tax rate:

http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/su_over.shtml

A compensating use tax is also imposed when taxable goods and services are purchased and New Jersey sales tax is either not collected or is collected at a rate less than New Jersey’s sales tax rate. The use tax is due when such goods, or the goods on which taxable services are performed, come into New Jersey. If sales tax was paid to another state, the use tax is only due if the tax was paid at a rate less than New Jersey’s rate.

You are a law abiding citizen, and pay the use tax..... right? ;)

Washington State requires FFLs to collect the use tax because they know that is the only way they can enforce it, otherwise the FFL will lose their state license.

My son is moving from KA to NY. He wants a HD firearm that his wife can use .
I asked about a Hi-point .45 carbine, and he understands that one can't purchase "pistol-caliber " ammo in NY without a NY State Pistol Permit.
I told him that NY must be so safe that no "Private Citizen" "needs" a firearm, the State will protect you.

Not quite -- you can't purchase "pistol-only caliber." That's a pretty exclusive club: .25ACP, .32ACP, .380ACP, 5.7MM. Anything else? Those are the only ones I can think of that nobody makes a long gun for.

This is the statute:
5. Notwithstanding the provisions of subdivision four of this
section, it shall be unlawful for any dealer in firearms to sell any
ammunition designed exclusively for use in a pistol or revolver to any
person, not authorized to possess a pistol or revolver. The violation
of this section shall constitute a class B misdemeanor.
