Anyone use this kind of ammo in their AK? How does it compare to 122 grain ammo? I wanted some AK ammo for christmas, and my wife didn't know what to get, so she had me go pick it out. I'd been shooting the 122 grain HP ammo, and wasn't paying attention at Cabelas and picked up the 154 grain SP ammo.

I've been waiting for somebody else to buy some and try it first. Thanks! :D
Let us know how it works for you.

A buddy of mine took a nice 8 point ~3 years ago with his SKS loaded with the wolf 154gr SP's. He told me that he shot the buck at ~75 yards with his yugo SKS. He said that after shot it it just tumbled over with 1/2 of its lung gone.

Read an interesting article in Guns and Ammo "Book of the AK-47" a few months ago asserting that the 7.62X39 soft points have better performance in ballistic gelatin than either hollowpoints or (of course) FMJ.

I've killed 3 deer with it. Complete penetration with golf ball sized exit wounds on body shots. The most recent was on Monday and it went down immediately and stayed there after a double lung shot. Bits of lung and cut hair were found 7-8 feet behind the doe.

One last year went 40 yards and piled up after a double lung shot. The third (also last year) I shot a bit high and hit him in the spine. He drug himself with his front legs until a shot at the base of the skull put him down.

It has always cycled just fine and seems to be the most accurate import ammo that I've shot.

I shoot pulled .30 cal 150g fmj in my M70 AK all the time. Runs good and at 100 yds is as accurate as the 122g. Wouldn't be my first hunting round/gun choice by far but I'd load up a SP 150g bullet and go deer hunting with an AK if I had to. I it load to 30-30 standards.

My AK likes it. I think it's more effective than the the ligher loads.
